Hi guys. I've been doing quite a bit of research on this as a friend of mine just brought home a 71 Deuce. Its a hardtop with heat but not power steering.

I like the idea of the bob with 49's. HOWEVER, this truck is going to spend a lot of time in mud pits and I'm curious why the change to a 4x4 when we already have a 6x6? Why are we purposely loosing an entire driving axle?

The idea was to move the fuel tank up into the bed, and then shorten the truck about 3 feet moving both rear axles forward and into that new space i've opened up. This would give us a short 6x6 and we'd run the 46" tires on it that are the max for a stock deuce.

I want hubs on the front so i can easily drive it on the road without spinning all the tires BUT could i also put a set on one of the rear axles just to make it a bit more manueverable?

I have some pictures of my idea that i got from a truck for sale on ebay but, naturally, they are not on this computer.

I've done searches specifically for shortened 6x6 but haven't come up with much besides a hate thread for one specific truck.

so any help would be appreciated

ill give you my story. i want/in process a bobbed deuce for many reasons:
1) to make a daily driver (mostly highway)
2) better mileage
3) more power
4) buying 4 wheels and tires
5) easier to steer
6) better top speed
7) just a fun truck

I think pulling everything from under the truck and moving the tandems in would make a great truck. Only thing with that is you'll end up using 46" tires instead of 48".

if you dont bob it you have a deuce.... very cool

if you do bob it you have what looks like a big M37...... also very cool

the reason to bob or not to bob are up to the individual who owns it. mostly for what use its going to be used for. I prefer a fullsize m35 but driving a bobber is easier.

the only post I've found that discusses a shortened tandem brought up issues with flexing and breaking cv shafts. But these posts were tearing apart the idea and didn't own one. I like the idea of keeping it 6 wheel drive but I want a smaller truck than a full sized deuce.

that's the one...and minus the million lights installed on it, I think it's pretty cool.

the post I found had people trashing it but did bring up concerns. I bet it doesn't turn well unless it has unlocking hubs on one of the tandems. And flex was also brought up as well as breaking you joints

sorry my phone autocorrected u into you. I saw it on ebay last month. Is there a glaring issue with a tandem that short? I'll do that recommended search right now.

I would suggest you find out if a 3 axle truck can be kept in your neighborhood and if you can register it easily. Some folks here have had a very difficult time with 6x6 trucks because of HOA agreements and other zoning problems. By taking one of the rears out, you now have an oversize 4x4, and generally get past any restrictions.

One member spent a lot of money fighting sich code resictions His name is Ryan McGill. You can search his member id and see what I am talking about.

The other idea is that you should do what you want to, and let your satisfaction, or dissatisfaction be the measure of how good an idea you have had.

I would bet the very short 6x6 rides like a buck board.

Just my two cents...
