Front Winch End Frame Disassembly Question

I am following TM 9-2320-361-34 in attempting to inspect my winch and replace all the seals and gaskets. I am not trying to remove the shifter fork and woodruff key from the shifter shaft. I removed the fork set screw and can move it out far enough to remove the ball and spring from the end frame. It just won't come out any further.

Any suggestions on how I might get this done?

I'm not really understanding what you're trying to do. Are you trying to replace the shifter seal? If so you need to remove the shaft completely so you'll have to remove the fork and key.

You do know that there's a set screw that holds the shaft in place don't you? It fits inside a grove right behind the seal. That's the only thing I can think of that would keep the shaft from moving.

I must have missed something. I am trying to disassemble my winch, check the major components and install new seals and gaskets. I started with the end frame per the TM.

I separated the end frame from the gearcase and bolt shaft and have removed the large seal on the end case. The next step was stated as removing the fork and the shifter shaft. I removed the set screw from the fork and the plug and the set screw from the end frame near the shaft plate. I am not sure if you are referring to another set screw. My goal is to replace the shifter seal and I assumed the shaft would pull out of the fork but it does move when I pull on shift lever and shaft. Any help is appreciated.

I am following the steps on page 16.2 of TM 34P

This is the set screw I was talking about. Looks like you've got that covered.

I have seen them kind of hard to get out before. The last one I delt with it had alot of water in it at some time and was pretty rusty. I ended up soking it for a week in PB Blaster and using my slide hammer (hooked to the shift lever) to get it out. Most of the time you can just pry under the shift lever while rotating the shaft with the lever to get it to come out. You also sometimes have to tap on the fork with a punch (driving it off ths shaft as it comes out) because it tends to bind on the shaft.

My winch had water in the end case when I first got it. It has been soaking in gear oil since then. The inside looks pretty clean and little rust. Does the shaft pull out of the fork and does the fork woodruff key usually stay on the shaft?

From the TM it seems that once the shaft pulls free of the fork, I will need to remove the plate and its retaining bolt to get the shaft out unless the key will pass through them. I sprayed the shaft and fork with PB today but will fill it up and let it start to soak tomorrow for a week and see what happens. I really appreciate your help.

The key will have to come out of the shaft before it will pass through the housing. Once it's cleared the fork you can remove the fork and then pull the key out.

I just did the same thing, but CRS seems to prevail. Look for an allen set screw down in the bottom of the hole on the handle end of the shifter. Its the thing that is keeping you from pulling the shaft out. The key for the shifting fork needs to come out, once you start pulling the shaft out. The shifter fork will just slide off the shaft.

Soaked the shaft and fork in PB Blaster last night and was able to get the shaft out by prying between the end case and the shifter handle. Got some cleaning up to do on the shaft but the parts are in good shape. Now on to the gearcase side. I will try to take some picture tomorrow.
