86 6.2 glow plug module repair

I'm looking for someone that repairs or sells the module for the glow plugs. I would go for the push button but this will be on a fire company brush truck. so the push button method is the last resort.

I would stick with the push button. The reason many of us converted is because the stock module is so problematic.

Just to clarify here: are you asking about the Glow Plug Controller Card? If so, you could do what I did after you replace the card. Mine hasn't fried (yet) but I'm waiting for the day. In the meantime I went ahead and ran the push-button system on it. Nice backup if I'm out in the boonies somewhere when it finally does decide to c**p out on me.

If and when mine does go, I won't be replacing it. They're getting more rare every year. Simple Supply and Demand. Why would I replace something that is known to be problematic with the same part that is also known to be problematic and spend an arm and a leg to do it?

Well, I'm the only one that drives this truck, and my switch is hidden up under the dash. Again, it's just a back-up in case my Card goes kapoot. I used a toggle switch. I personally wouldn't recommend doing that to anyone else, though. See above.

Get yourself a push-button switch, like maybe a Starter Push Button. I don't know realistically what kind of load will be going through this, I just got the beefiest switch I could find. I don't have a part number for you, but I bought a Starter Push Button Switch at O'Reilly's awhile back for about $10.

Find your Controller card up next to the steering column, it's the big black one. There will be a light blue and a dark blue wire coming out the back right next to each other, along with many other wires.

I just stripped the casing back in the middle of the wire on the Light Blue wire and soldered a jumper wire to it. Connect that to one side of your switch. If you look up onto the outside wall under your dash, you'll see a multi-pronged grounding plate. I just put a connector on the end of the other wire coming off my switch and ran it to the grounding plate.

Basically, when you ground the Light Blue wire, it activates the Glow Plug Relay under the hood on the Firewall.

As always, verify all of this first. You can take a test light or Volt/Ohm meter to see what each of the wires on your Glow Plug Relay are doing and when.

Also, if your card is still working, experiment a little. Notice the approximate outside temp and turn your key forward. See how long your "WAIT" light stays lit. You need to know about how long your GP's are warming now with the stock system so you can duplicate that manually after you convert.

that is the easiest way to do it. the one i have now bypasses the control card completly. I have a two wires running to the switch in the cab from the glow plug relay. It came from the GL lot that way or i would be doing it as stated above. Ditto on the starter switch or similar momentary switch. I have used toogle type switches before but i dont recommend it

Newark electronics has all components to rebuild cards checkout the website. For anyone who wishes to repair their own. Never had any luck at My local radio shack they dont carry as many parts as they have in the past.

My card wasn't working and when I pulled it today one of the "things" had come un soddered and was rolling around. Found where it went, soddered back in and was lucky that it still worked. Considering the way the rest of my day had gone I was due some good luck!

I am considering hiring my brother in law, who runs an electrical engineering firm, to make these cards with modern material and beefer. He designs cards like these everyday and his facility is set up to do this. Would anyone be interested in a new card if it could be had at a decent price? If there is suffienct intererest, I'll get a quote from him.

I advise not timing the WAIT light, but looking at your voltmeter. You will notice, at least on mine, that the glowplugs are still being energized after the wait light goes off.

Didn't know that. Thought these were near impossible to come by. I will have to PM him for a spare!!!

Are they defective or just not tested?
I started to build a glow plug card test
fixture but lost the cards I needed to test.
If I had some cards to test, that might motivate

non-working cards from some of the trucks ive had over the years. some have obvious overheat issues, some look perfect but all are bad as far as i know. we have people in this group that have the ability to repair them. for the moment its cheaper for me to install a manual switch.
