Since this is my first post I will start off by saying hi to everyone. This forum is awesome! I am a member on other types of forums and by far this is the best I have seen. I love the rules, I love that there is not a lot of smack talking and BS going on. The amount of information on here is unbelivable and priceless! I have spent the last week reading lots and lots of threads and understand the search before you ask rules. I know alot about the rockwell axles. I have two rock crawling rigs with rocks under them.

So here is where Im at. I finally got a bobbed duece 2 weeks ago. I had been looking for one for a couple of years and finally found the deal that was right. I traded some junk for it:mrgreen: Its a 1971 mutifuel with heat non winch. Overall good shape.

It came with Mich 14x20 xl tires on stock wheels. i thought it looked kiind of goofy so I got a set of Hemtt wheels last week from Rodger in ohio. They look great and seems to be a good price for whats out there. I have spent the last couple of days mounting them. I got the front two wheels changed out, took it for a test drive. There was a whole lot of bounce in it coming from the front. Before the wheel change it drove great. i can't imagine there is a way to balance them or mount them any other way then the way I did.

So my question is, Is this normal or is there away to mount the wheel on the tire so its more "true" then what it is? When I mounted them I had the wheel on the ground, laid the tire down on it, center it as best I could, then put the wheel together.

How are the HEMTT's adapter plates assembled? They could be just a little bit off, causing a bounce. If bolted on, they may be able to be moved just a hair to correct the problem.
That could be it. They fit together pretty tight so there is not much room at all for adjustment. It is on the list to check once I get them all mounted

are the hubs flipped? could you have a "tracking" issue with front and rear widths offset?
When I got the duece the fronts were out and the rears in, with the rear tires sticking out farther than the front, but still drove good. I'm in the process of flipping the rears now so it will track true when all the new wheels are on. Im doing this project by myself so if you can imagine I'm getting a little worn out.

I wonder if those balancing materials in the tire have any effect on an "out of round" condition.

Methinks it won't.

Suggestion: Once you get all your tires mounted, trade positions to see if the bouncing moves. Maybe this way you can discover the sole culprit and effect a repair.

if the tire IS actually out of round, you should take it to a commercial truck tire shop and have it shaved true.


BBs, water, equal, etc will only do so much for balancing..

Like I said above, when I first got it with the stock wheels it seemed like it rode a little better but at the same time it still might have had the new factor on it and maybe I did not notice, but I think I would have. It does not do it at all speeds. In the 40 mph range it rides real smooth. From 10 to 30 mph it can do some crazy stuff. I got to kind of lock donw on the steering wheel to keep her straight. I have not got around to taking the wheels back off and make sure everything is true as best as possible. Today I picked up a stock whinch with all the parts so of course getting that mounted will be the next thing i will mess with. :mrgreen:

Well, alot of guys on here say with the radials, you need to take the caster(I think its called caster) shim out from the front axle. I think it might need reversing. Let me go do a quick search.

HEMTT wheels are almost twice the weight of a stock Deuce wheel AND they come pretty much unbalanced...! That alone could cause all the bouncing but... it normally gets worse at 40mph and up.... can you feel what is called "wheel shimmy"? What TP were you running?

Balancing (at least statically) such a heavy tire/wheel combo of nearly 400 lbs is a must IMO, unless you would only go off-road.

I didnt think you could get 1400X20s on stock rims are you sure thats the correct size 395s are the biggest tire that will go on a stock rim.
These are the wheels that were on it before I put the HEMTT wheels on it. Are they stock, Well I guess I really don't know that answer. How ever I know the tires are on my truck and that they are 14x20, they say it right on the side of the tire so yeah bud the tire size is correct.
