top speed and mpg for M818?

Anyone know the top speed of a stock M818 with 1100x20 tires? Not winding it out, but a "comfortable" highway speed. I know the word "comfortable" probably shouldn't be used to describe their highway performance!

Also, what's the typical MPG on diesel fuel ?

50mph is what mine likes, and I've gotten 7mpg without a trailer.

Loaded, I get about 4mpg at 50.

I've had mine to 62mph for a short burst, but it's scary, and bad for the engine.

Bottom line, an M818 isn't a road tractor. Even though I'm hauling WVO with mine. A m915 is in my very near future. (like today, if I win it)

Mine with no mods does 56~57 MPH on the floor @ about 2150 RPM; that = 6 MPG with no load. Rolls down the road fine at that speed.

50 MPH is a good cruising speed.

I would guess not as the 915 is not a 6x6, it is 6x4. No drive on the front.

the M915 isnt a 6x6 it has a unpowered front axle. The m916 is a 6x6 but is much much bigger. Larger engine, Cat semi-automatic or allison automatic transmission, larger payload, and rear mounted 45,000 lbs winch

a few members have taken M916 tractors and super singled them with 395's and i have to admit they are really something to look at

At 2k rpms my 818 moves at 52 mph. Last road trip hauling a loaded M146 trailer was 5.4 mpg. Bobtailing or towing, seems to make no difference to the fuel usage .

My M818 did about 70mph, all the way from MI to NY.

It was on a step-deck trailer though!

You planning a roadtrip?

Nope, I got caught as a witness to an accident on base, so I missed the end. :-x It went for what I could have bought AMGenerals for. But the auctioned one had the 16spd, so it would have hauled butt.

My m818 mpg definitly changes based on speed and load.

I drove mine abut 600 miles one day at about 50-53mph. The limit was the tires boncing at over 53mph so bad that the cooler on the seat next to me was getting air. The truck ran fine, did not have any probles with faster trafic either. Not sure on mpg but around 5-6 seems about right. But by the time I got home it was all I could do to get out of the truck. Talk about stiff and sore.

yeah, the springs on a m818 are stiff if unloaded. I got a soft top because I got tired of pounding the hard top out with my head! Angie wouldn't even ride with me to Haspin, it was so bad. Rides ok with the empty tanker, rides really sweet with a loaded tanker.

I recall 4 mpg for a m818/172 combo loaded from NJ to ft Drum, NY at 50 npg on flat ground. 11-20 radials on the tractor and 10-15 radials on the trailer hauling a 6k rtfl. The radial tires did not change tghe top speed but improved fuel economy with less rolling resistance.
