M35 reo Exaust

Just bought a NOS exaust manifold of my REO but before I put it back in I was curious to know what the army would cover it with if anything i dont want it to look like my old one. do i powder coat it? , High tempeature paint? What is Authentic

What is Authentic? nothing. Bare cast Iron. If you want to cover it with something do so.. its your truck. I would go with some sort of High temp manifold coating.

I think painting it with some high temp paint will help it last longer. Black won't stand out too much and you'll keep the rust away for a little while.

I suspect originals were bare metal, but that's a guess based on years in the car hobby, not any experience with M35 gassers.

I would make sure it is DEAD clean-then coat it with a high temperature paint in either gray or black.

He is correct. It just sold on ebay. I got sidetracked when it sold for $25. Eastwood has a high heat grey that looks like bare.

I just put in a new manifold in my 53 gasser this past summer. It came in an off red primer - I painted it with high temp BBQ grill paint. Been running the heck out of it hauling rock out of a creek - still looks good.

I agree with everyone else...paint it with a high temp paint. What color is the NOS one you just got? Paint it to that color (I'm guessing steel grey).

Just leave it bare. That is how they came. Unless you are going to be doing parades, shows and such without any long runs or hard pulls. My OA331 manifold gets cherry red after a long hard pull. As in get out the hot dogs and roast them up to eat kind of hot.

The one thing I would suggest is some kind of heat shield for the carb. Hot engine in a hot climate means hard startings sometimes.

If you decide to have it coated, check out jet hot. There coatings hold up better than any other coatings available in the market. There website is www.jet-hot.com . I have sent lots of manifolds and headers to them, but never had anything done other than the polished aluminum style of finishes. We use there coatings on alot of the hot rods we build and they have held up great even in high horsepower configurations. I know with the polished finishes you would have around $250 in it, but I am pretty sure the other finishes are cheaper.
