There are several different type of "medium" towbars available on the market today. I can personally think of three right off hand. Here is the data of one of the "Deuce/CUCV" medium category towbars. (MRAP Medium is 220 pounds with feet and all pins.)
Hunter towbar shipping specs in pieces;
Pintle hitch end, 48 lbs. 54" length
Swing arm end, 36 lbs. 46"
Extension arm, 25 lbs.
Extension arm, 25 lbs. add 7" when inserted
Feet with 5 pins, 16 lbs.
Total weight, 150 lbs.
If a complete towbar, There is no way to combine these units into two shipping packages to avoid overweight fees of 70 lbs.
Three packages are required.
Pintle hitch end exceeds length requirement of 48" to avoid extra length fees via UPS if shipped from UPS store.
Packaging alone is averaging $10 for boxes each at UPS store X's two boxes.
Having it packaged by UPS store is another $10 each fee for labor.
If one has a UPS account, considerable savings can be occured, but it would still be $100 plus if towbar was complete with both extension arms, feet, and pins.
Conclusion: Package yourself for savings after finding boxes and carry to UPS direct rather than the UPS store. Your labor is free. Consider two hours for labor to package and carry. You could ship for less than $100 this way, even with insurance. My UPS shipper is 35 miles away, so check you local direct shipper address for transport to the site. Freight palletized shipping is easier and doesn't cost anymore if you are the one doing the shipping. Prices will vary from $105-165 depending on distance shipped. You still have to meet with the carrier, so there will still be labor and fuel considerations. They do NOT come in neighborhoods with large tractor trailer rigs without incurring extra fees of about $45 on each end. Add to weight if you purchase towbar axle clamps or any other commodity.
