putting an auto in a m35

Buy a $800.00 retired school bus and do an engine/trans swap. The transfer case is seperate and wouldn't have to be removed. Thats what I am planning on doing for one that I am doing this summer.

i was just hoping to find a auto to bolt up to that motor
IIRC the stock motor has a standard SAE bellhousing (think it's a #3 but not 100% sure) so getting an auto trans to bolt up shouldn't be a problem. The trick is going to be in the torque converter. You will need to find a flex plate that bolts to the crankshaft of the stock deuce engine. The easiest way to do it would be to get something like a DT466 with an auto trans already attached. This way the trans would already have the proper shift points in it to work with the rpm range of the engine.

One other issue is the overall length of the auto trans. If it is too long you will need to move the transfer case back a little in order to make room.

i disagree (sorta). the trick is getting it to fit. the stock Spicer is about 19" in length. you won't be finding a medium duty auto trans to fit in the same 19" spot. something will have to give; either change to a shorter motor in the process or shift the transfer rearward (which will only gives you a few inches without quite a bit more work to gain more).

path of least resistance is indeed to change the motor concurrently with the trans. so unless you really like your truck, i'd work on getting an A3.

Whats wrong with a 5 speed??? Just saying...
Might not be able to drive a stick, that is one of the reasons for the A3, a lot of TODAYS young kids don,t know how to drive a stick, so teaching to drive a auto MV was one job, teaching them to drive a stick MV was two jobs, one to shift a stick, the second was to drive a truck

You will be hard pressed to find a auto trans to fit a stock deuce the allison 545 is common in buses and about the shortest at 31 inches you will have to move the TC back.

by offering direction/opinion related to the question asked. i already stated that an auto trans wouldn't easily fit without an engine swap.

i just didn't understand how a different (i.e. completely re-worked to include powertrain) was relavent to the OP wanting to find a trans that would swap in.

sorry - must've been confusion on my part.

i think a 545 or 1545p swap would be pretty easy as long as you dont have a winch on your truck. Moving the transfer case back would be worth it..If you have a winch the 545 or 1545p has the pto on the wrong side which would make alot more work for you.The a3 uses a 545 or 1545p.The 1545p is a lock up trans and would give a little better mpg .The big question is what would you do for a fylwheel ?The bellhousing bolts right up but as far as i know there wasn't an auto trans used on a multi fuel
