Stuck Budd Nut

I have this happen all the time. I use air wrenches so this is what I do. The outer nut should be 1 1/2 inch. Stick a closed end wrench through the bud hole over the nut, then I put my air wrench on the end of the stud and tighten it back up, put your pb blaster on the thread and run the stud back out again, If you can't quite get the stud out, tighten it back up again and repeat. Works every time. If you can't get it just cut it off and get a new stud and nut. Good luck.

With a pork chop you will also need a 13/16 square socket if you want to use air. I've had good luck grinding the lip off of the thimble and popping it out.
Yo, Gimpy. If installed correctly only one wheel will be captured between the nut and thimble.

I vote for one rim too.


One of the reasons I posted this was because I could not find anything in search and wanted some ideas, all very good! Many Thanks guys!!!

i have one of those geared wrenches that you can borrow but im not that close.. i have grinded the big end off just enought so that i passes thru the rim hole.

I got my stuck lug nuts off with out a geared lug wrench, I just walked the wheel out as I undid the thimble, then hot wrenched the dam thing

I've had this happen many times. Easiest thing to do is just cut it off if you've got a torch handy. I wouldn't worry about dismounting the tire to do this (the heat will be a long way from the rubber).

If you want to prevent this from happening again, Install the inner nuts (thimble) dry but anti-seize the outer nuts. I've heard people advise against adding any lubricant to lug nuts but this has worked for us for years. Never had one come loose because of the anti-seize and never had one stuck like yours after we started doing this.

I went and bought a 1" impact and set up a stand alone air receiver that I can run either off the rear gladhand or shop air. I keep it in the back of the deuce with all stuff I need. Never thought I would need a geared wrench, but...

I've have the tires off twice so far and have always placed the budd inserts dry and lubed the nuts...had worked so far...

If it does not rain tomorrow, I'm going to try to place it on the truck and "rock it". If that does not work, I'll gas axe the budd stud as I have about 3/8" play in the assembly. I looked at grinding the flange part and even though I have an 8" and 4" grinder, it looks like I'll be there for a while.

put a CUT OFF disk on your hand grinder, it will take it off in no time

It sounds like the threads may be gaulded. The fine threads of the lugnuts will do that every once in a while. If that's the case, you won't get it off without cutting it.

Well, I got the assembly off by grinding the back of the stud off. Took about 5 minutes with the 8" grinder. Pulled the trigger and let the weight of the grinder do the work. Only reason this worked was that I had about 3/8" of slack to play with.

Once I got the assembly off, I placed the nut in a 1 1/2" socket and used a 6" crescent wrench to turn the nut off with 1 FINGER...Guess the heat from the grinding did some good.

When I had a stuck thimble, we welded a outer lug nut onto it and used the 1" impact on it with the correct amount of air compressor behind it. Took it right off.

My problem was, and still is, that I don't have a large enough air compressor.
