New to the site, Shopping for deuces.

Well, Im new here. Ive been into offroad since i was about 4 (racing trophy trucks, etc) and am now 19. Im looking to get a deuce to turn into a 4 door in the future, (not so much looking into bobbing, just big tires and keep 6x6)

But for now, im just looking for a deuce. Now heres my issue. What kind of deuce should i be looking for? I like the idea of a bed, But the cargo box is very cool too!

Im mainly looking at the deuce because it seems simple, and the MPG rating out of the multi fuel engines is 8+ MPG. cant beat that. Ive seen/read a little bit about 5 tons. Would those be a better option? how is the MPG on those? Thanks for your help in advance. and i apologize if this has been asked a thousand times before.

ones a giant box on the back, and one is just a bed? Maybe i phrased my post wrong. One looks like a box truck, and one has something similar to a normal truck bed. Thats what i meant.

Ahhhh....Box truck, commonly referred to as a M109. Normal truck bed (Cargo Truck) is a M35. Welcome, read and learn. Stick around there's alot more.

I was 19 when I bought my first deuce. Check out CL and EB for classified listings. I got mine by asking the guy I bought it from if it was for sale. (I used to drive by his house and wonder) And luckily for me he had just decided to sell it the night before. Dont expect to have a 4 door rig until you have saved your pennies for a few years, decades, etc. Unless you are good at fabrication and can do it yourself.

I build offroad race cars. I am very good at TIG and MIG welding and metal work/ fabrication. Currently building my own race truck. this will be my chase truck/ tow rig! Or even possibly i will build a flat bed for it to hold my race truck. We will see as time goes on. Need to get one first!

6X6 deuce 2 1/2 ton truck, M35a2 manual transmission and manual steering, M35a3 autotrans and air assist power steering....booth have same cab and same back bed....m109 same front as m35, big box n back, theres also cucv, p/u's and 4 door blazer type....

"Box truck" AKA M109 or "flat bed"

Which one???

All depends on what you want to do with it. Look at it this way... If you were to buy a "Normal" size pick up, for your use would a topper be better or a standard open bed? What are you going to haul in/on it? Below I'll list just a few pro/con about each for you. The list is much longer and you can and should add to it and then make your decision.

M109:

• Currently more difficult to find than the standard flat bed Deuce but they are available.
• Most 109's will require a fair amount of work in the box to bring it up to good usable condition. Most people on this site that plan to use the 109 for hauling or camping end up ripping out all the interior and doing a fair amount of restoration work replacing/repairing metal that has rusted. One couple even did a 100% complete reskin.
• Once made water tight makes a really cool camper, personal moving van, hide out fro

m the wife, emergency storm evacuation vehicle

"Normal flatbed Deuce"

• More available
• Better MPG due to less weight and wind resistance
• Pallets can be loaded with a forklift (Especially if it is a drop side) and bulk materials like gravel can be dumped in with a front end loader
• Overall more versatile than the 109

Like I said, this is just the beginning of your list. You can/should add to it and then make your decision.

Of course there are some people here on SS that could not make up their mind so they bought both and made a trailer out of the back half of one or the other and tow it behind the other one. There are plenty of pictures of this here on SS if you search for terms like "Camper conversion" "M109 camper" (or replace "Camper" whit "RV") "Deuce trailer" Spend some time in the "Trailer" forum and look at what some people have built.

There is a ton of info her on this site. So much in fact that it is often hard to find exactly what your looking for but if you spend some time looking before you ask most people here will be helpful and point you in the right direction.

LOL..... Just don't go asking about how to make it go faster or how large of a tire you can put on it without doing a LOT of searching and reading first....

One more thing; Before you go buy one, make sure you have a place to park it. Seems that many places have various ordnances/rules/restrictions/regulations/laws, that one way or the other restrict/prohibit/make it a real pain, to keep one at home.

Siince you asked about 5 Tons, I have a answer for you. The 5 Tons Require a CDL to Drive on Public Roads .

Not in all states and not in all situations.

Many states make it very easy to alleviate that requirement when the truck is privately owned and not used in commerce.

This topic of course has recently been beat to death and there are many extensive threads discussing this issue. Lets not hijack this thread by beginning a discussion of this topic here. The "issue" has been brought up and the OP can do some searching and reading about it if that becomes an issue for him.

I do believe, i am going to get..... TWO! As time allows.

and one with the box, For a communications rig/ place to sleep. When racing the baja 1000 it would be very nice to have a place to sleep out at some of the VERY remote pits.

I will get the flatbed one first, and really like the multi fuel engine.

You will find that the top speed on most M35's are 56-57 mph
