10K Winch Assembly Questions

I am about to reassemble my 10K front winch. I have installed all new gaskets and seals and everything is cleaned up and painted. Unfortunately, I have slept some since I took it apart and have a few questions. The TM list the assembly steps but I am unclear on two items.

First, can you give me a hint on the best way install the thrust ring closest to the end frame housing and the drum sliding clutch when assembling these parts on the drum shaft? Particularly, how do you fasten the drum sliding clutch to the shifter fork. I believe the round tabs on the shifter fork go into the slot on the sliding clutch but I am not sure the best way to get all these together.

Second, at the clutch end of the drum there is a slotted plug. Can you tell me what that is for?

Im just good for the slot plug, drum drag so when your pulling out line by hand it does not over run. Take the plug out and neversize it and I use a washer or quarter and just run it up to where there there is just enough drag to stop the over run.

You are correct that the tabs go in the groove on the shift clutch. Easiest way I've found to put it together is to put the sliding clutch dog on the shaft and then work the end cover on while sliding the fork into the grove. After it's together shift it to make sure everything is lined up.

Floridianson, I am not following you. The plug I am talking about is on the cylindrical surface of the cable drum at the slip clutch end. It is slotted and is about 1/2" in diameter. It is not shown in the 206 TM which only shows the allen plug that holds the winch cable in the cable hole.

that plug that your are talking about from what i could tell when i was taking mine apart and reassembling it was to be able to take a punch and drive the woodruff keys into the slot.

That would be the correct method, but why bother trying to unscrew that plug if the keys can be seated from the clutch side face also, using a hammer and some improvised punches/ wedges...:)

Thanks to all SS folks who gave me input on my winch. It has been cleaned, painted, and given new seals and gaskets. All back together now (except the fairleads) and appears to function just fine. I have a new cable and chain from TJN Murray and that will go on when I put the winch back on the truck. Here are a few photos of the finished product.

Rapco has complete pricing online and you can mix and match to your hearts content. I use both rattle can for small stuff and gallons with a HVLP spray gun for the big stuff. I really like their rattle can 383 CARC substitute green and it matches perfectly with their bulk paint. I do not like the rattle can brown and black since they do not cover as well as the green and too many drips. CCEquipment does a great job with their brown and black but he uses bulk and a spray gun. I am going with Rustoleum brown and black for my camo work.
