M35a2 transmission broken shaft

So I allredy know the trans is prone to failing in the deuce but i was curious,

How offten do you see a broken Output shaft on one?

I finally got around to seeing what was wrong with my buddies truck after towing it home a few months ago and it appears the output shaft is broken. The trans looks brand new (truck was rebiult in late 80's) No chipped teeth, No excesive play. Is this common? i use mine pretty heavily and have had no problems, should i be concerend?

Makes sence, That was the first thing out of my mouth when he told me the trans broke, "how many times did it bounce?" Just wondered how common it was.

Interesting. I have a lock out on my middle axle but I also run my rear tires at 30 psi (fronts at 60) so they do not bounce.... I get a nice smooth ride.

i do not believe the 3053 is prone to failing. out of around 3 million transmissions made for the military, we have heard of only a few hundred that have failed in a big way. you can break anything if you try hard enough to. having seen how some of these trucks are driven in the mil, i think it shows just how tough this trans is. i knew one person who would hold the throttle on the floor and then dump the clutch to spin the rear tires. he never broke one, but maybe someone here got one of his trucks and then the keys for second failed!

Wow, I was just about to post this.

At the Ga MVPA Fall Rally last September, a reasonably youngish looking guy (mid thirties) was with his wife and their kid and they were walking around looking at the display vehicles. It was deadly obvious they didn't have an MV and I really got the feeling this was a "let's take a trip and see the trucks Dad drove in the service kind of thing.

He told me exactly this story-he said "I can't believe any of these survived-we use to rev them up as far as they would go and dump the clutch and see how far they'd spin the tires".

Ok, mabye i was wrong by saying they are prone to failing but 2 out of 4 trucks i have bought i have had to fix the trans, and a third one has a problem.......

if you don't own it people beat the snott out of it. look at the u-haul trucks for example. we got kids at work that beat the **** out of our service truck, and i always tell them ,don't ever ask to borrow my pick up. they always say why not.

Buddy of mine and his friend went to pick up a deuce his friend had bought. The got it fired, then tried to move it and it wouldn't go. My buddy went to check something and the friend (a new MV'er) revved the diesel and let the clutch go in 1st gear. Yep, e-brake was seized (which usually takes backing up about 6" to unlock) and popped the output shaft at the drive flange. He asked me if I wanted the trans so I took it off his hands when they swapped it out. Oddest thing...IT WAS A 3052 not a 3053 behind that engine. 3052 is the gasser non-overdrive trans with a deeper geared 1st gear. Bet that diesel was screaming at convoy speed. :mrgreen:
