Rear Axle Lockout Install, Twenty Minutes Tops!

I changed out the front rear axle today using the OD Iron supplied axle and the jatonaka AVM locking hub.

It seemed to be a perfect match. The axle seems to be quite sturdy. Nothing to the exchange. Take out eight bolts, remove the axle, insert replacement and put the eight bolts back in. Follow the TMs and all is well.

John Tennis makes this stuff too easy.

Ps: Be sure to align the bolts with the gasket on the install. Took less than 20 minutes.

It's gotta be harder than that. You make it look far to easy. What kind of total cost are we talking here. Last i checked those lockout hubs were pretty pricey (worth it though) and i'm going to guess the axles were not cheap.

I did not feel anything. I could see that David was not fighting it in the turns and it left no skid marks on sharp turns. Of course, I was not driving.

The total time did not exceed twenty minutes for the install. That includes going to the garage for a screwdriver to pry the axle loose.

The total cost is about $450 for this. I have the AVM hubs on the front also.

There is supposed to be some mileage savings on this. I will know sometime next year.

how strong are those lockout hubs though. seems like the stock shaft has been time proven. i would get nervous that when loaded with 6 ton of stuff in the back and that locked in that it wouldnt be able to take the torque going around a turn (having both axles hooked together). I dont have proof to back up my thoughts though. i would like to be able to un hook my front axle though to save tire wear. Does anybody know how much longer the rear tires would last with this dosconnect vs. having them both locked? I plan on having my deuce for a long time and if i could justify the fuel savings and tire life savings, maybe ill do it.

One major drawback to this change: you can get stuck if someone spits out the window in front of you! I've watched this deuce on a smooth grass field when one wheel would spin and the truck just sat there.

Na, thats what the front end is for. I noticed about a 1mph increase and a large decrease in tire wear in all tires esp the fronts.

I would not ever consider putting mine back to stock. I would bet $ that the lockout hub is just as strong if not stronger than the axle. it takes quite a bit of force to move the selector to the lock and unlock position. it is quite a piece of hardware.

So you only did one side of the forward duel and this disconnects the entire axle so only the most rear axle drives ? Did you do the drivers side or passengers side wheel ?

Please more details. I just put AVM hubs on the front of my m35 and I like it much better !

I removed the set up last Summer and put the lock out hub on the front of the second deuce with another I got from JT.

The problem as jimmcld put it is tire spin. On pavement it is not a problem. On the slope leading from my house, gravel road, it spins and as Jimmy says in grass it spins a lot.

The hubs from JT are incredibly reliable, by the way. No problems in three years and the price is right.

And, the reason I changed back, the locking and unlocking was a PIA in parades and such.
