Manual glow plug override questions

I am reading there are two ways to install the manual glow plug override. Is this true?

The first way the glow plug wait light still works and the second way the gp wait light works when the key is turned, but does not work when you push the manual button.

I guess the logical next question is if a person installs the manual gp override the first way (by removing the light blue wire and connecting it directly to the manual switch), will he have to use the manual override every time he starts the vehicle?

My brother and I did the mod today and we used the second way by splicing the light blue wire. I tested the manual switch after the key turned gp wait light went out and heard chatter like it was working.

First way from the forum:

the manual switch. all you need to do is take the blue wire that plugs into the glow plug controller harness (under the dash by the brake pedal) and run it to a button switch, then ground the other side of the switch. If you do it this way then the wait light will still come on as normal.
Seconds way from the forum:

when installing the push button do you unhook the blue wire from the card and leave the card in our just wire to existing blue wire
Leave it hooked to the card, just splice into it with another wire
I am so confused... :driver:

The wait light is not operated by the glow plugs or a manual switch. It is controlled by the card. All the wait light does is tell the driver not to attempt to start the vehicle until some portion of the overall glow plug heating cycle has completed.

When you go with a manual switch you become the controller and it is your responsibility to hold the button (energize the glow plugs) the proper amount of time for the combination of engine temperature, outdoor temperature and heat time of the glow plugs installed. Once you have completed that initial heating cycle then attempt to start the engine.

If you remove the blue wire from the controller, the controller can never energize the glow plugs until you reinstall the wire. So yes when you remove the blue wire you will have to use the manual push-button every time conditions dictate that the glow plug cycle is needed.

Chattering in a relay is a bad thing. It means you either need a new relay or you need to check the coll voltage (or both).

If your controller card is working then it cycles the glow plugs, when the wait light goes out the plugs may or may not be energized (what does your voltage gauge show at that time?). If it did cycle them then you pressed the manual button and re-energized them when hot. Depending on the glow plugs you have installed long cycle times or repeated cycle times can damage them.

Have you read this? (gp module theory of operation)

Have you downloaded the manuals and verified that your glow plug system is working correctly?

I have the self limiting 60g's. I don't know if chatter was the right word as I could hear something working. I did read all I could including the gp theory of op and I know my gp's are working. The manual override is not something I want to keep testing. I just want it to work in an emergency.

You did answer my question and I feel comfortable with splicing the light blue wire instead of the other way.

We also changed to ignition and door locks so I am no longer on the same key as everyone else and added insulation to the hood. Next project is heavy duty floor mats when it gets a little warmer. Rubber is stiff in the cold.

EDIT- All that is said, it looks like you just pull the cover off under the steering wheel, find the gp controller and go to work on the light blue wire. Even the pictures are blown up to help.

We spent over an hour researching and making sure we had the right part, even though the splicing is easy. So a person can come here and read or pay someone who probably doesn't know any more about this than the vehicle owner. I wish there was a section where all the meaningful topics are saved together. That is what I do on my computer, but it is not available away from home.

I am adding some pics.

We used a red wire from the button to tap into the light blue wire which you cannot really see in the picture and of course a good ground.

Anyway, what took so long was we were looking on the right side under the dash area and all around not realizing it was right there in front of us on the left side of the steering column.

It is an easy mod and well worth it IMHO.
