So I'm not going to list the auction or post pictures, but its so rare to see one local I had to look and see.

Anyway, This is mostly a question, 5 ton truck. 'Brakes frozen'. Really nice picture of GL parking it with skid marks in the gravel. Nice looking truck. Would look better with bows and a cover... But that's just me.

How does one get one of these out of the lot without doing more damage?

What would cause the brakes to be 'frozen' on a 5 ton?

Just curious.

If the brake pads were adjusted too close to the drum they could rust in place. Another option could be a faulty master cyl or air pack. If they were faulty, the brakes could not release after the peddle was stepped on. I'm sure there is more, this is just off the top of my head.

One GL truck I won said rearend locked up, it had a bad transfer case.

The M939's have full air brakes. NO air the brakes will lock. Add air or "cage" the brakes should get you out ok. Oh and it's only the rear brakes that have the springs so thats why the front are not locked

I was at an unmentioned DRMO and they were trying to load this truck without caging the brakes. I was busy doing my load-out and figured they knew what they were doing, oops, guessed wrong. After this, I did show them how to cage the brakes, you would think that would be Trucker-101.

The cans have a large spring that apply the brakes when no air exists. Caging is a process where a T shaped bolt in placed in the maxi and a nut is screwed on to release the brakes. Only rear axles have maxis

The air brakes take a release of air to accuate and air pressure to release. If the truck needs to be moved, without air, you would need to cage the brakes. This involves inserting a special bolt to mechanically release the brakes (cage bolt). The cage bolt pulls the mechaism inturn releasing the brakes.

I agree with the air brakes as possibility but looking at the pic it almost seems like the wheels dug in more on one side, as if they had spun backwards on that side. This would lend weight to the possibility of a driveline lockup.

If it's driveline then just pull the axle and tow away, brakes and cage and tow.

on WEDGE brakes, the cage bolt and some also a nut is under the dust cap, it takes a 9/16 deep well, the nut type turns one way to cage, the bolt type turns the other way

Not a front brake issue, the rears were locked so they were dragging it with the loader, the front did not like being pulled sideways to steer, so it popped off. After they caged the brakes the loading went fine, well all but missing that wheel.

So moving on with this, sort of like putting the pin in the surge brake to keep it from working on a trailer? Not exactly, but close?

Air brakes? Means you'd need a CDL to drive this, right?

And who said this couldn't be a learning experience for people?
