If you guys who have been painting your CUCVs can you take some pictures of your equipment you use and let us know what it is. I would like to paint my own rig this summer but am clueless as to what I really need. Ive seen allot of HVLP comments going back and forth. High Volume Low Pressure. Thanks for any help.

I have yet to paint a CUCV but I have painted almost everything else... Muscle cars, trucks and even locomotives. I have used old guns and hvlp, they seem to do the same results. All I can say is use good paint or your results come out bad, even if you are looking for a flat finish dont cheep out. And prep is key to a good job

I like the small gun a lot. I was priming deuce rims with it last weekend, I could get about one good coat across the "pink" areas you see in the picture before it went empty. I think it would be good for camo patterns.

Edit: The big gun is good for about one side of the M109 Box.

Here is how I did my first 09.. I used the 19.95 spray gun from Carquest.. works great for Gillespie paints.

Well, my compressor is overkill for painting. I went for the Sears Craftsman 80gal@175psi 2 stage 5.4HP because I wanted something that could do sandblasting work but keep the price under a grand. Got it for $995 on sale with 0% financing on the Sears Credit card. Heavy sucker @450lbs and a b@tch to get into the basement where I run it.

For painting I fill it up with air then turn it off. The regulator (sold separately) gets set about 25-35 PSI. The big gun uses maybe 1/2 of the 80 gallon tank between paint refills, the small gun barely puts a dent in it.

It is awfully handy for running sanders, grinders, needle scalers, etc tho. My wife uses it to dust off her fake plants and furniture and says its the "best thing I've ever bought...." ;-)

Paint equp.

I like the HF paint guns I use the HLVP larg gun and the detail gun. I spent a little more and got them for 49.95 and 39.95 ea. The detail gun is great for cutting in the camo pattern and cuts down on the overspray alot.

Be sure to get a " Air Dryer" for the hose and air supply you are using.

Well I just ordered Harbor Freights combo "professional" automotive HVLP gun kit. This has a 20oz and a second small detail gun. They were on sale for $49. I also picked up a gravity fed gun stand and some extra cups. I did not find any air dryers but will pick those up locally along with some hose and proper fittings. Can someone recommend a respirator mask? Here is another question. Can I just sand down or rough up the existing paint and paint over it? Yah.... Im a noob at painting.

That is what I did and it came out great. I used a HF dual action sander with some 220 and 320 grit sanding disk and scuffed up the entire surface. And then washed and degreased it.

I'm using the 3M Paint and Pesticide mask you get at Wally World or Home Depot for $25-30. I wanted something I can find the cartridges for easily. Seems to work pretty good, Gillespie paint and Xylene (synthetic thinner) give off a distinct odor that you can't smell when using the mask.

OK I think this is the final question. I know Dave (82ARBMP) uses Rapco paints so I will go with that. How many gallons would I need to do the interior and exterior of a M1028? I will be putting a camper shell on the back. Thanks for all of the help everyone.
