I have a M818 that gets all the water in the oil but no oil in the water. I put a new head gasket on and did nothing to improve the problem. i have read that the oil cooler could be bad but I should have oil in the water also, but it all goes one way and pretty quick once it has been running for awhile. Not so bad at idle but drive it 5 miles or so and there will be no water in the radiator. Any suggestions on why this is happening or what i need to look for. Thanks for any help.

Think you answered your own question. Bad oil cooler/o rings. Did you do a compression check? You might have a bad liner or cracked block also.

someone should move this post to the correct spot also.

Cracked liner, the water pressure is opposite all most no crank case pressure, oil cooler will tend to mix the oil/water

The crack opens when it get hot, when the piston is up, the water goes in to the crank case, when the piston is down, the water goes out the exhaust, on compression, the compression goes into the water, which in turn dumps it back into eather the crank case or exhaust

Quick note. A pin hole in the liner will give you bubbles in your radiator with a heating issue most of the time. A bad liner O ring /seal will dump coolant directly into the oil pan with no other symptoms. You can drop the pan and get a coolant pressure test tool. Pump it to 12 psi and grab your flashlight and watch around the bottoms of your liners for coolant passing by the seals.

Nope.com. The compression and scraper rings don't go down to the crevasse seal area, only the oil control ring does. The liners will pit at the top of the liner at the flange too, but that usually causes a coolant leak externally as it leaks past the counterbore and down the side of the block.

The rest of the statement is true.

I guess I should explain that 90% of the liner pitting happens at the crevasse seal area, the other 10% else were on these older blocks that don't have the holes and slots cast into them. Newer block castings have little holes and some slots that when the coolant isn't taken care of, heavy liner pitting, erosion, electrolysis, whatever you want to call it, happens at the spot on the liner where the coolant comes through these places. The spots are at mid liner and at the forward facing, top side of #1 liner.

the liners can pit anywhere on the liner, called "decavitation". not 90% at the seal area. this is cause by bad/weak coolant. In other words, "Lack of maintenance". you have to keep up the coolant to ensure the block and internal parts won't decavitate. what you should do is, before removing the oil cooler, drop the pan, pressurize the coolant system. have someone rotate the engine, also, Because the piston can cover the hole in the liner. check for any leaks around the liners. if thats ok, then check your oil cooler. it has to be one or the other. Good luck! let us know what you find, thanks.
