PTO on m1028

On the M1031 the PTO ran the 12k generator but the M1028a2 had a dually bed. no generator. What was the pto used for on either the a1 or a2? Did they really have a pto?

There is no actual pto to drive anything on the M1028a2 or M1028a1, its just that it has a NP205 transfer case and you COULD put a pto on it.

I believe they just came with a NP205 which has a PTO port. I do not believe they had any specific application for a PTO.

It also had a hydraulic (from a PTO) driven pump to deliver the 100 gallons of AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) agent which is a water/foam concentrate mix. Quick disconnects in the hydraulic lines allowed rapid replacement of the skid mounted system for a fresh one or for other uses of the truck. Really a great idea IMO - can have the skid available as a fixed purple K unit for standby at a refuelling point and use the truck for general airfield maintenance chores yet still self load it onboard quickly (assuming it is on a pair of stands of some sort with the rear braced against a pole or tree etc) for use as a rapid response vehicle at a small airfield or helispot.

Not that I recommend backing a truck under a skid suspended over 3 feet above the ground while taking out the field expedient supports with the rear bumper or anything. Speaking purely hypothetically of course
