Got the next project in the shop, it's a 49K mile M1008 that belongs to Ed (hmsgoodhope) here on the board.

The truck is in good mech condition and has very little rust but has had some HERD hits to the body. Forklift hits on both sides and the tailgate is mangled up pretty bad (he is looking for another tailgate to buy).

Interior is good and so is the dash and seat. I will just be re-dying them both the original color.

work started

After a little work, interior out and new mirrors installed. Now on to the bodywork....pulled out the BIG forklift dents in the doors. The front fenders dents have to be pulled now. I bought a new stud welder and will post pictures of the work.

Paint question here

How much paint should you mix up ahead of time? I if I shoot the roof I can only get half before I have to reset for the other side, is it ok if it gets dry before I get reset?

Thanks

Mixing?

Epitts, no sure whast your asking...my HLVP gun holds about 14oz nicely so I mix about 28oz and that gives me 2 full guns before I need to mix another batch.

On wether you want to paint half the roof then come back and paint the other side...you should have/mix enough paint to cover at least one whole panel...if all you can shoot is one haf the roof something sounds wrong. Or you need a bigger gun/cup. With my 14/16oz cup I can do one light caot on the whole truck before a refill and then come back with a heavy coat/wet on one side at a time.

New dent puller

One tool that I have been wanting was a stud welder/dent puller. Well I got one and tried it for the first time today and it works GREAT!!

Here are some pictures taken by my 9 year old.

First you grind off the paint down to bare metal, then insert a copper stud into the gun and hold the gun on the metal and pull the trigger and ZAP it on!!

Then take your dent puller and attach to the stud and apply pressure as you hammer back the dent.

Anyway, it really works good.

You answered my question, I was thinking I need to mix up my whole gal of paint. Just two guns worth at a time. As far as the roof i ment, is it ok if it gets dry while I move my latters to the other side. This is my first paint job.

Thank for taking the time

If the bed is on, shoot the roof from the bed.

Painting the roof

Yep, if it's a M1008 jump in the bed and paint the roof.

For a M1009, you need a lader and shoot one side at a time. The other thing is to make sure you overlap and cover the area with "wet" coats to help blend the paint. It cuts down on streaking effect.

Painted!!!

WOW, man O man did this truck take some work to get the body halfway straight!!!aua

Both doors were caved in from the fork lift, both front fenders were caved in behind the wheel well, the bed on the passenger side was hit, and the tailgate was a bent about 6 inchs out from the bed!!! :( Both cab corners need fixing and it had a rot hole behind the drivers side rear wheel well....

It took me about twice as long to do the bodywork on this truck as any other I have done.

Anyway, I had enough and stopped where I was and painted it. It looks WAY better than before and will look even better with everything installed back in it.
