Is this necessarily bad... Replace the spare bad? I'd rather not hike out when I'm way in. Should I get the green fix-a-flat stuff? Can tubes be installed in the field?

The tire is the Silent Armour type with plenty of tread??

First you need to find where it is leaking, around the rim it should be broken down and the rim sanded, If in the tread maybe you could plug, in the sidewall replace. Check your date code, if old might want to replace it anyway. Tread has little to do on a spare, dryrot is more of a concern. Wayne

Fix a Flat is junk and dosnt work on tubes very well. I took my spare in last week and had the tube replaced, the tire isnt in great shape but it good to know I have a spare that holds air. The tire shop can install a new tube and most of the time reuse your existing flap.

Installing a tube in the field is not easy! I would just spend the $65 dollars for piece of mind.

There's tubes in M1009 spares?

Like boondock says, take it to a tire shop and get it fixed or replaced.

I think he is asking if he has a flat can he install a tube in the spare in the field. Can he? I doubt it, well not very easily.

Take it to a shop and find out why its leaking down. Might be as simple as a loose valve core.

The Title of the thread is "spare is not holding air " , does not seem a high IQ needed statement nor needs a great in depth answer , so fix it :grd:

air it up and use a spray bottle of soapy water to find your problem. As long as it is not in the sidewall it can be fixed. Make sure to spray the valve stem with the cap off too.
