First you need to find out which type of starter you have

the old style direct drive 27MT or the new style gear reduction 28MT.

The old style is fat and heavy. The new style is skinny and the motor is offset

Thanks gents! Suppose I will be able to tell when I drop starter assy tomorrow which one I have? Looks pretty fat to me. When you say offset. I am assuming in relation to final drive? Hope to be back to daily driver again before weekend. Will let all know what I have learned so those that could use it will be able to apply. DMLII sends...

I have the Old Drive on left. Not clear when they made change? Mine is 1986 model M1009. Many thanks to all on guidance for replacement Solenoid. Job took about 35 minutes. Not much room to R&R thats for sure. As usual, engineers do not think about technicians. No problem. Next time will R&R in half the time. Beast is back on road. I am so pleased! Would offer things to avoid for next that needs to perform same task but pretty much straight forward job. DMLII sends...

Next time jack up the truck while leaving the tires on the ground. Makes a world of difference by moving the driveshaft out of the way.

Glad you got ot fixed

Super idea warthog! Fortunate that we have a full service Mechanics Bay with two Racks at work. Both were occupied though when I jumped on Starter yesterday. Had to make a couple interesting turns w/starter assy on way out and back in. With suspension down would have definitely been easier! Would rather have been standing vs. laying on back also. A little tender ya-know.:p
