jake brakes

does any one have any thoughts or know a kit that they make for jake brakes for the old multifuel. sure would be a lot less ware and tare on the regualar brakes and easyer to drive in the redlight to redlight junk in town. or even a pac brake that would work.. i would rather have the jake brake over the pac just becuse i know its a better system and its proven itself more times than the other junk out there. just a thought maby just a dream hope someone has an idea for it.:grd:

there has been a exhaust brake setup used by a few, maybe CRANE TRUCK will jump in

Jakes would be glorious in the deuce :grd: Unfortunately, on the redlight note, jakes are generally prohibited in town, and there is much to be said for gearing down early, and slowing down slowly.

Yes, that is why you see "NO ENGINE BRAKE USE" or "NO EXHAUST BRAKE USE"

An exhaust brake is the only choice, unless you can get Jacobs to engineer, develop, and market a compression brake for an engine design that is now obsolete.

Blue-Ox is an exhaust brake outfit who shows interest in developing a system for the multifuel engines, check it out. But it will be expensive, met with them in 2008 and the cost was around $3000 to $4000. JT

Jake Brakes work much better than exhaust brakes. The only problem is that Jacobs doesn't make a engine brake for the multifuel. The way engine brakes work is pretty simple but there's quite a bit involved to build one though. I think it would be very cost prohibitive to build a one-off engine brake.

Jacobs does not offer a "Jake brake" for the multifuel engine. If there was room for one under the hood, and if you found a way to install one, it would be awfully loud with the original military exhaust.

I had a Pacbrake on a 33,000 pound vehicle years ago. It had the butterfly design and could be activated with a foot control, or with an electric switch. It worked flawlessly and was very quiet.

I don't know anyone who has a Pacbrake on a Deuce but it would help slow the truck down, provided the driver learns how to shift properly without overrevving the engine. That's where I see the problem. The M35A2 with it's manual trannie is not a prime candidate for a Pacbrake, or any other brake with the butterfly design.

My advice is, drive defensively and go slow and leave sufficient space between your truck and the guy in front of you. These trucks weren't designed to go fast. Towards the end of WW II, when REO started to build them, the world had not as many highways as we have today. The top speed of 55 with the truck loaded up to capacity was actually pretty respectable back then. They built trucks that could go where there were no roads.

I found this item years ago, and I wanted to use it on a rotary engine motorcycle for extra stopping power.

PS. I have never had much luck with High-Temp Loctite.
I have found that painting my bolt threads with a dab of aluminum paint works much better.

I could not get the address to up-load so, see next post for address.

Some automatic transmissions (Allison) come with a hydraulic retarder driveline brake, about on par with the "Jake" brake in performance, but without the noise.
Sorry for another referral to the '69 xm757, my 8x8, but it came from factory with the hydraulic retarder. Not used by the Army, but it's there and easily hooked up, even has the prepunched hole pattern for the foot pedal.
