24 volt saved me tonight

24 volt saved me tonight...that and bypassing my gp resistor. When I bypassed the resistor two days ago the truck starts easier. I don't know why, but I do know 24 volt starters start easier too..

Today I was hunting for about 9 hours and when I got back my lights were on. Of course the truck would not start, but it still had some juice. I called my friend who was about the only one who could find me and he showed up in his wife's car instead of his big truck. Probably to save fuel.

Anyway, that little car battery connected to my front battery started my truck with no effort and I was on my way home.

Lesson learned by me...

I can leave my truck for a week or more and will still be showing good on the volt meter after starting. before I had it my volt gauge would be near the yellow till I drove for a bit and recharged it. Sun is free and the chargers can be found on ebay for a decent price.

Yeah, but what good would that have been in the OP situation with leaving the lights on. That solar charger would not have been able to keep up with the load of the lights.

The OP would have had the same situation even if the GP resistor was not bypassed to 12v. The front battery would still have been low and likely not produced the full 24v to charge the GP and turn the engine over fast enough or at all. Adding the 12v source from the other vehicle produced the needed 24v to turn the starter fast and supply the 12v to the GP system. You can jump start these trucks with 12v source at the front battery only. If the rear battery is dead, it will not make the 24v needed, so you need another CUCV to jump it with the slave cable. This is the one disadvantage to bypassing the block as you will not get 12v to the GP on a bypassed system. So you need a 12v jumper pack to charge the front battery to supply the GP if bypassed.

Anyways, leaving the lights on with either system would only require 12v at the front battery to start the truck. I have jump started a few CUCV with just a 12v jumper pack after leaving lights on.

I was going to do that yesterday, but my brother shot a buck and we could not find it in the dark, so we decided to come back the next morning because something big was in the woods with us and flashlights only help so much. Since we drove out there I decided to stay until dark to hunt instead of waste the fuel for the drive.

This is the one disadvantage to bypassing the block as you will not get 12v to the GP on a bypassed system. So you need a 12v jumper pack to charge the front battery to supply the GP if bypassed.
I am buying a jumper pack today.

EDIT- I bought the jumper pack and it will be behind the seat after fully charged. Also some heavy duty jumper cables. The Solargizer will be done soon, God willing...

I borrowed these pictures from other posters and they are not mine. I am using them for information only.

The batteries are wired in series and there is a 24 volt junction bar or bus on the firewall. These are great pictures IMHO and I thank the op's that made them available. Again, they are not my pictures, none of them are... SRM

I am new and kinda handicpaped knowledge wise to electronics. Are you saying all you did was unhook the gp resistor. Do the gp's still work.

My cranking procedure is to turn it on and when the light goes off turn the key and it cranks right up. I mean quick. Does this change anythign as far as that wait.

After the gp resistor bypass I turn the key, the wait light comes on for about 10 seconds, goes out, and I start the vehicle pushing on the accelerator at the same time 1/4 to 1/2 down. After several more seconds the voltmeter goes from yellow to green and makes quick a buzzing sound or something like that.

It used to cycle 3 times before I did the bypass and now just once. I am waiting for colder weather to see how that goes, but should not be a problem. This is on my M1008.

Not true. While it is true that the front battery powers all the 12V stuff on the truck, you can jump EITHER battery with a 12V vehicle. If both batteries are dead you can actually jump them both with a 12V vehicle at the same time with a pair of jumper cables. Granted there may be certain situations where getting a second vehicle may be a pain in the a** if not impossible, but if at least one battery has a good charge on it, its usually not an issue. Case in point, I left my truck parked yesterday with the headlights on for about 7 hours :doh: When I got back and turned the key, nothing. I managed to get somebody to give me a jump so I hooked the cables up to the front battery. clickclickclickclickclick. . . and that was with the other vehicle running. I still had one more trick up my sleeve. I pulled my tool kit out of the truck, swapped the batteries around and jumped the rear battery (which had been in the front) Viola! No damage to the electrical system of either vehicle. And as much as I hate the electrical systems on these trucks, it is still more or less stock: 24V starter, batteries in series, two alternators, etc.

Sorry but I think You are a bit confused and misleading... you'd need two different 12v sources to jump both batteries simultaneously.

You didn't need to move any batteries....

The way to 'jump' a cucv with two dead batteries and only one 12v car would be to put 12 volts to one dead battery long enough to recharge it, then put the 12v to the other battery and let it charge some, then try and start... you can move the cables and not the battery to do that.

I'd start with the rear and finish on the front if its been 12v bypassed to make up for the draw the glow plugs may make during the start sequence.

If it doesn't start after that, you'd have to keep cycling back and forth between the front and rear batteries until they were charged enough for the start.

If you had two 12v cars with two sets of cables you could set one to the front bat, and the other on the rear.

Either way I'm just glad to hear the Original Poster understood that he'd just killed the front bat and only had to jump it to get a start.
