Hi,
I bought my first diesel ever today, a 1985 1008...absolutely thrilled, drove it home an around town, through some mud to try out the 4 wheel drive. Everything was perfect. Then, 6 hours after purchase (it has 36000 miles) it won't start. It makes a terrible screaming sound. I whack the starter with a pipe wrench...nothing changes. I roll it forward to catch flywheel (both in neutral and drive) and again nothing. Only that screaming sound. Called previous owner, who seems to have taken great care of the truck, and he says it's never done that before, and I tend to Believe him. What the $&@!? Any ideas what cause this and what to do?

I would take off the flywheel inspection cover and see what's going on with the starter gear and the flexplate ring gear. IIRC, it's held on with 6 bolts so it's not too difficult to take off (can be kind of a PITA to get around the steel lines for the transmission, though). Probably goes wthout saying, but play it safe if anyone is going to observe down there during cranking.

Welcome, I'm just down the road from you in Dickson.

Don't know much about CUCVs though. You may want to pull the starter and take it to a shop to have it tested.

One of my 1009s was doing that. Now and then it would make a sound like a cat makes when it is stuck between the radiator and the fan blades. The starter solenoid was not kicking the gear out far enough and it was grinding on the edge of the flywheel. Swapped starters, problem solved. It happens.

This may not be your problem however.

Love the analogy.

Hey guys thanks for the help. Tortured cat scream should be the official sound name...very accurate. Anyways took the starter off, to autoZone where they couldn't test it cause it's 24v. Then decided to open up starter and "rebuild"...try to grease up stuff that neede it. Did that and went to put it back on and saw the flywheel teeth were severly eaten up in one spot....no idea what caused that (please share theories)... But then just decided to move the flywheel. This I did but putting a wrench on the left alternator bolt (as you're facing the engine) and turning clockwise while pulling the belt in the same direction. Then getting under it to make sure its moved enough to miss that bad spot. Starter back on everything's great. I assume once I get back to that bad spot I pop the hood and turn engine again...

So, is it true you can turn the engine the wrong way and screw up timing? If so did I do that?

Also, I welcome any theories for original cause of problem as both flywheel and starter seemed nearly perfect.

Thanks!

Somebody probably turned the key to the "start" position while the engine was running. The gear on the starter ground on the flywheel while it was spinning and sheared some of the teeth off. This is pretty rare because, from what I understand, the gear on the starter is usually made of a weaker metal than the flywheel so that the starter gear is the one that gets damaged.

Make sure your t-case shifter is fully in gear. I've had times where I done that and it would make a screeching sound because of the parking paw.

But yeah, pull the bellhousing cover and check the flexplate.

Nobody mentioned the starter bracket?

Make sure you have the brace on the end of the starter, mine was loose and ended up destroying my flexplate.
That one little spot will get bigger and bigger, you need to replace the flexplate
Or go to manual, like a sm465 will bolt right in place :)
