What numbers are you using for you registrations/title?

in NY my m101a1 had a serial number that match a 1964 ChrisCraft boat. They balked at first then had me do a pencil tracing of the dataplate. With that they were satisfied and issued the registration.

Maine registration

I just registered my 101A2 in Maine ( I live in PA ) and it was so easy I can't imagine registering it any place else. I originally tried to register mine in PA but it turned into a major PITA. I had the SF97, FL certificut of title, bill of sale, pictures, and made a rub of the data plate but still had a huge hassle. In addition to this they wanted me to take it to a trailer inspection site to have them verify the data on the trailer ( I guess the pictures and the rub were not good enough ). On top of that, they told me 8 to 10 weeks for a title and about $150 in fees. I said the heck with that and had it registered in Maine. All I had to do was email a copy of my bill of sale, Pay $90 + 5% sales tax on my $276 trailer, and I had my Maine plate and registration in about a week. Plate is a semi-permanent 5 year plate. Very easy!

Registering in Maine doesn't get you a title. I don't know about NY, but I imagine you have notaries/tag transfer offices up there (not DMV) so call around to see if anybody has experience transferring titles for a trailer purchased from the government in a military auction.

Vin codes are duplicated and overlap all the time between manufacturers and through the years. All states have procedures for this. You just need to find someone who has run across this problem before. GL has given you the necessary paperwork for your state, you just need somebody competent to process the title request.

Then you will have a clear, legal title and valid registration in the state you live in. Do it right. Then you won't have problems later, and it will be harder for somebody to steal your trailer and get away with it. Plus nearly every buyer wants a TITLE.

NY has a government run DMV you have to use for any vehicle/driver related transaction. Most of the time, the person behind the counter doesn't know how to handle unusual procedures and you have to budget out at least a day to find the right person. If You call the DMV office, they have a really bad attitude, but the call center person seems to know what to do. Of course, they could also be wrong, and just be really confident.

I can't figure out which is goofier, NY's government-only offices, or PA's mix of government and private offices. I've titled several trailers at a local notary that went smooth as butter. The first 2 I did were a nightmare, but once I got my stuff together, it was pretty easy.


Anyone know if the Maine tags are transferrable? IE, if I reg a trailer to Maine, can I sign over the reg in lieu of a title when I sell or dispose of the trailer?

This wont help you in N.Y. But....
Here in La. i just registered my Cucv with military stencils in lieu of the license plate. That is complete now. And while i had the DMV on the phone I ask them about my M101A2. So i gave them the FIRST 7 serial #s as required and they ran it and said thats good to go. Its $45 one time payment for a lifetime registration. No TITLE required. First i had to take my trailor to the State Police for a inspection then stencil the 7 numbers on the bumper then send money and pics to the DMV. Still waiting for paperwork to come back. It took 3 months for my CUCV
