The lift is only about 4-5 feet. Problem is the pump was made for pumping fuel from above ground tanks and not water from creeks and ponds. The pump is an impeller pump with an aluminum impeller and pump body (non-sparking). Even though not its intended design, it will do what I want. It will eventually wear out, fortunately I have 2 and paid $63 each

As far as you Firemen go, I appreciate your input and thank you for serving your communities. Most people do not realize the time and energy it requires and the life changing events you face and how those events impact you.

I looked through the TM that Emmando 22 posted for your pump. On page 2-9 for starting instructions it says on the first line that before using the pump be sure to prime it first. Also, if you are having a hard time pulling a suction after you prime it you might want to look into changing the wear rings on the impeller. See page 5-3, Items 17 and 14 in drawing 5-1. These rings will affect how good it pulls a suction. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Once I prime the "self" priming pump it pumps like crazy and does not miss a beat. I will take the advice and install a check valve or foot valve by the strainer so it is easier to keep primed. I picked up a ball valve to install in place of the pipe plug used on top of the pump to prime it. I can just prime it with a watering can and close the valve.

I put the hose clamp around the collapsed section as suggested and it works perfectly.

Thanks again for the help.

instead of buying adapters I bought NPT hose ends (cheap online) and cut of the ends of the fire hose. I put NPT ends on both pieces and ended up with several adapters and several sections of fire hose with NPT ends. I use the NPT hose all the time unless I need along run then I start adding fire hose.

Standard 1-1/2" firehose that DOD buys has brass NPSH ends (25ft lengths). NPSH is same as pipe thread. The US fire business used NH (also called NST) for 1-1/2" fire hose so NPSH is of no ues. Large amounts of it NPSH (new/unused) comes thru surplus system.
