Hi guys,

Does anyone have a Napa part # for a drivers side Alternator for an M1009?
I just had my alternators tested, and it looks like Gen 1 is bad.

So I do not mind replacing it with a new or rebuilt one,
I just need the proper part number.

Because Napa does not recognize the OEM part number.
And I trust the part #'s from you guys more then what I would get there.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Good day,

CJ

P.s. I need that part number today, because I need my truck running to get to work tomorrow.

Hello Doghead,

Thanks for the note, and the advice.

How hard is it to rebuild it myself, I have never done it before.
But I am not opposed to learning.

One problem with that is, I work so many hours lately,
that I would have a hard time finding the time to do it..

And that is not counting how long it would take to receive the rebuild kits thru the mail.

Thank you,

CJ

It take less than an hour, with the right tools. You'll need an impact wrench to remove the pulley nut. Then, just a screwdriver and a few small sockets or nut-drivers. You can buy the parts for about $40.

A local rebuild shop should be able to fix it for around $100.

Don't throw your old alt away. Rebuild it, as a spare.

I would not suggest you do it yourself. Have NAPA or another parts store send it to their rebuilder or check your yellow pages for a rebuilder near you and take it there yourself. Shold be less expensive than buying a new or rebuilt unit and it will have a warranty.

Hi Guys,

At this point, I would like to replace it, it is not a problem, I can afford it now.
Then after I replace it, I will keep the old one and have it rebuilt so I can have a spare.

I just need the correct part number, so I will check out the one Doghead provided.

Thanks guys,

CJ

CycleJay:

Here is the info on Gen 1 from CUCV WIKI:

The Passenger side Alternator MUST HAVE a isolated Ground. The Driver side does not. A Autozone Part number for the DRIVER side alternator is DL7157 (also found in a 1975 cady with a V8 engine) This Alternator is 78 AMP and works just fine. You MUST have a Isolated Ground Alternator for the passenger side. Ebay, www.saturnsurplus.com, and many other places stock this alternator.

The part number doghead gave you is for a "NON" islolated ground alternater. It will only work on the drivers side and will cause an electrical short if you install it on the passenger side. DO NOT install it on the passenger side.

I don't know why NAPA can't look up the original part number.

GM 1105500,

I just typed it into the www.napaonline.com website and checked the "Interchange" button and the Wilson Rebuilt unit came up.

WIL 90014277

It is also listed in the CUCV Wiki. It is a rebuilt unit and sometimes the rebuilder screws it up. So check for the "isolated ground" before leaving the store.

It is usually a special order item at most NAPA stores.

These trucks are getting older and although parts are available, the stores are starting to not stocking the parts on the shelf where you can walk in an leave with the part. Doesn't work very well when you need parts NOW.

If this truck is your daily driver and only transportation, you really need to think about getting a different vehicle for work. This applies to any 25+ year old vehicle.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the information.

I do not want to rebuild at this point.

I would rather replace. I can afford a new one at this moment.
I just need the correct part # for the drivers side alternator,
and which store should I go to? Napa, Advanced, Oreilly, or Autozone?

Thank you,

CJ

We have already given you the part numbers.

It depends on if you want a stock isolated ground unit or a civilian non isolated ground.

NAPA wants about $220 for the original equipment type. It isn't available at the other parts houses.

Or you can get the civvy type for around $80 that will only work on the drivers side. Just about any of the parts houses will have it.

We can't make up you mind for you. It's your choice.

Could have rebuilt the alternator by now....

Local shop, buy parts, do it yourself.

For now, you better use a battery charger and charge your front battery overnight, so you can get to work tomorrow.

You could swap alternators(positions) and then you could probably start your truck all week, while you wait for parts or an alternator(the rear battery only gets used while starting).

HI Guys,

Thank you for the info.
Well, I only need the drivers side, so I will go with the $80 non-isolated ground,
since the drivers side does not need isolated ground.

And I will rebuild & keep the old one as a spare.

Thank you,

CJ

Hi guys,

Again, thanks for all the information.

I would like to go with a new one, but so many of you have said to rebuild,
I may go that route instead.

But on autozone part # DL7157, I looked at the photos on their website,
and the photo that shows the backside of that alternator only shows 3 contact places for the wiring, but the old alternator has 4..
Any ideas on that?

I want to learn as much as possible about my M1009 and how to maintain it myself.

Thanks again, Happy Thanksgiving..

CJ
