Request for GP replacement assistance - Police Involved

I have an 1985 M1009 Blazer that has stopped running, which I believe to be glow plugs. My plan was to simply change them and be on my way. But it appears to be a little more complex than that. Because of my work schedules I have not been able to work on the vehicle for the past few weeks so it has been sitting on the back side of my garage with the rear plate inside the rear window and the front plate on the dash. Our local law enforcement professionals have embarked on a campaign to adjust for their lack of funding my ticketing any vehicle that has past due plates, which mine does not fit that category. It is licensed, insured, and on my property. What did happen is the rear plate that was inside the rear window, fell down into the vehicle, so the police have issued a complaint stating that I must start the vehicle to prove that the vehicle is not abandoned. I have had two conversations with them over the past two days. America, you have to love it. So I am extremely motivated to get this running quickly.

I do not have a GP controller card, it has been removed by the previous owner. I also have a manual GP switch mounted to the dash. The surprise was when I removed the first GP to find out that I have Humvee glow plugs currently in the vehicle. I would like to install the AC60 glow plugs that I purchased, realizing that I need to change the spade ends from the dimple to a flat blade connector. But I really do not understand how this affects the resister wiring on the firewall if at all. I have attached an image of the firewall, the best one I have right now. I do not have a VOM, it has been ordered but has not arrived yet. So right now I cannot test the voltages of any connections. Suggestions before the Po-po arrive again?

You have a registered, plated, insured vehicle ON YOUR PROPERTY and they want you to start it to prove this vehicle is not abandond...? This is taxation w/o representation.

From reading your thread you seem like an easy going guy but why are you letting the Po Po make you jump through hoops when it is none of their buisness.......?

I say show me the ordinance that states you are in violation of anything.

changing to a spade connector will not effect the resistor, yours looks original, you could resupply the glow plugs with 12v to prevent the cascading effect of the 24 v system.

To get you out of this pickle, use a very short squirt of ether.

Since you have the manual glow plug switch, no worries about premature detonation from the glow plug heat.

I know ether gets a bad rap, but used very, very moderatly it is perfectly fine on a 6.2 with the glow plugs not cycling. Pop the hood, shoot a short 1 second spray into the air cleaner, get in and crank. If that doesn't do it, repeat a few times.

If he has even one glow plug operating, ether has a good chance of killing his engine. Ether should not even come into your thought process with a 6.2.

Using it was article 15 worthy in my old unit.

I am not crazy about the situation either, but the young breed of officers we have now are very cold and stiff. We used to work with the police to watch the neighborhood and notify them when something looked out of place, now it appears the police are suspicious of everyone and everything. There is just no talking or reasoning with them. Sad, very sad.

Yes, I had considered the ether, but it appeared to be a no no from everyone here.

If you have keys to it, how is it abandoned? Off topic but it appears we are in the next phase of the collapse of America if this kind of crap is happening in Ohio and not California like we're used to.

To get back to the point, does the dimple really prevent anything other than the connector shaking off? It should be fine to get it started. if the connection is loose and you don't have time to start it, could you put on a dab of solder-paste to ensure a good connection?

If I use an olive oil based spray can I lower my Cholesterol? Sorry, I digress. Are there any changes I need to make on the firewall wiring to use the new GP's?

The glow plug relay on the fire wall , behind the master cyl is supplied with 24 V with the top red wire, disconnect it and tape it up. From the top of the relay where you removed install a short wire to the triangular 12 v supply nex to it.
This will supply the system with 12v.

You won't be able to slave jump start it hooked up like this , but you could reconnect in 5 min if you had to.

No changes are required to use the AC60G"s

I would get a car cover then request a search warrant if they return and want to look under it.

Stay patient with this situation, I know it would be challenging for me. :beer:

Charge the town/police/county or whoevers rule this is, for the fuel for starting it to prove it is not "abandoned"

Simply put ac60Gs in it and start it for them(I would also resupply the gp relay with 12v). Then ask then to make an appointment for the next "test".

How long can a vehicle not be run for, there?

He has no card, and a manual switch.

If he doesn't push the switch, no current to the glow plugs.

Units have that policy because too many people are idiots when they use it.

I would PUSH it from one location on your property to another.

If they return requesting you to start it, tell them any one can see you've moved it since last time. IF they want to see it run, you are a busy man and you will be happy to schedule some time for them sometime next year, say April or May, once your work period cools down.

And sorry, but if you do NOT know how to use either, do not use it.

That said, I've used it for many decades on several 6.2's with ZERO bad effects. But you can NOT just spray and spray and spray.

It's like throwing a little gas down the carb to get your gasser running. I'm unaware of any diesel in can type of thing to spray into your truck to give it a little bump in the fuel delivery system.

Yup.

Used in moderation, it is fine.

Used like a fool, goodbye engine.

I watched a tech at a dealership spray a steady stream of ether into the intake to run it after a filter change to prime it. Wasn't my truck, but it was the last time that dealer did any work for me!

Keep in mind guys the question was not ether or no ether, it was the wiring on the firewall. :)

I did not want to install the new glow plugs and turn it over only to fry the new set or something worse. I love the beast way too much to do that to it. We usually wear Hawaiian shirts on Fridays to the office, I told my wife that if I was a cop on the way home I would have pulled me over for sure, she asked why that was. I told her if I saw an old white haired guy driving down the road in an old military vehicle, Hawaiian shirt on, grinning from ear to ear, he must be up to something. He is too **** happy.

I have to go buy some wire, anti seize, spade connectors, and dielectric grease. Sounds like a porno going wrong.

Near as I can tell from the picture, your wiring is set up correctly for running 12v glow plugs (like the 60G). Also, instead of replacing the glow plug connectors on your wires, you can just cut down the terminals on the glow plugs. Just take a sliver (~1/16") off one side with tin snips, install and plug in. I did this on mine about 6 years ago now, and have yet to have a wire fall off a terminal.

If you want to REALLY piss off the po-po, do just what dstang97 says, except add a mail box to it.

ONCE you make it YOUR mailbox, it becomes a FEDERAL CASE if ANYONE messes with it.

There was a rich oil man in Abilene who had a twenty foot pumper put on his front lawn so EVERYBODY knew how he made his money. HOA lawsuit ensued.

Then the guy added a mailbox to it. The lawsuit was dismissed. Problem solved.

NO, I'm not making that up.
