Maybe the loud boom was when one of the battery cells shorted out. Did either one of the old batteries look swelled or distorted? Batteries have been known to blow their top off when going bad.
Also, double check your charging system. Make sure your not over-charging "cooking"...
You have a bad cell in one of your batteries. I had the same issue several years back. To be safe, spend the money and replace both batteries.
