Those beams are forged steel and you should be able to weld them with no problem. However rather modify them I would get some rod ends, bungs, and some tubing and build a new set, but the price of cutting and welding is much cheaper. Tom

The M35 and I'm sure other military trucks all use White Oak for spacers. It's not as prone to rotting as other woods are and can handle a lot of weight. I'm sure the government spent millions figuring out which wood to use. Tom

If your just playing around with it like I'm doing then air ride is fine. Also adding the shocks to the rear will give your more stability your talking about. Now if your 100 miles out in the middle of nowhere and a bag blows out your in trouble. Have you looked at "Dirtygrunts" air ride...

The M35 uses a 3.00" hub socket and a M105 trailer uses a 3.375" hub socket. Therefore I'm guessing that the M105 may in fact have larger bearings than a M35 does. Look at the TM for an M35 and several trailers you might find a hub that would work. Tom

Not to rain on your parade, but there are several guys on SS that already make these plates CNC'd for at lot less money and I think there using 1/2" plates not 3/8" to build them. Good Luck Tom
