To answer the newest question in this old thread first. Yes, the statement about the timing lines just being an approximation or starting point is true.

I don’t have a Tach n Time Machine so I can’t answer about that. I do have the Snap-On machine that works the same way. I even did a video about the different timing methods. Maybe this will help answer some of your questions:
