    Spare Tire Mounting

With a Detroit Locker, running a smaller spare can cause wear. This differential allows a faster coasting wheel to ratchet over the driven, no different than driving in a circle with identical diameter wheels. If you have a sub diameter spare, drive gently to prevent wheel spin as torque will...

    CUCV 1008,1009, 1028 prices.

I've only inspected 4 M1031 SECMs, all had some system issues with many being original install mistakes. Doesn't help the manuals are still restricted. Thankfully most components are quite durable. The generator needs to spin at 1800 RPM to get both 60 Hz and full voltage (no AVR, rotor...

    Spare Tire Mounting

I carry 2 Jack's and 4 jack stands in my M1031 SECM but it is set up as a mechanic vehicle 😉. In the picture, 2 is left front pivot for the carrier, 1. Goes into a hole in the frame rail. The securing bolt 4 and lockable nut 5 are in the right rear. Carrier is diagonal to the frame...

    CUCV M1009 electrical issues

Stock alternators are Delco 27SI isolated negative. There are 4 required wires, battery positive, battery negative, excite voltage and voltage sense. If the excite and sense are wired to the battery positive, the alternator will charge, at reduced output. Excite and sense are in a two pole...

Will group 31 batteries fit in a CUCV?

Tape insulate the terminals, then use a small loose wad of aluminium foil to see clearance. Or run a straight edge from inside fender lip.

My M1009 has died new curve ball thrown Updated

If you want a job done right.. Glad you fixed it with an easy button fix. Thankfully most minor maintenence services are easy. Except lift pump..

My M1009 has died new curve ball thrown Updated

How many years and miles? Almost looks like it got oil mist from the CDR. Or you were riding the bumper of a diesel that had been tuned by a fan of rolling coal. My filters are dusty with wind blown grass.

M1031 PTO Governor Control - Factory Technical Manual

Just finished tests running my 50 amp plasma torch off 208 single phase with the air compressor running. This is an inverter type machine which means highly reactive power, diodes first rectify the AC, charging a large capacitor bank. This causes a leading power factor. When the compressor is...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

Steinschlagshutz? I love the German language, literally stone impact protection, all in one word. Just like gloves are hand shoes in German.

    M1008 rear brakes

Probably the ride height proportioning valve mounted on the rear axle and connected to the frame. In proper operation, it reduces rear brake pressure when there is no load. Many remove this valve as problems are common. There was a GM Technical Service Bulletin covering this modification.

M1031 PTO Governor Control - Factory Technical Manual

I have found the Goldilocks adjustment for this governor system. Make sure all switches, sensors and crimp terminals are correct, found one loose only by the heat it was generating. Gain set to 70%, this varies based on actuator and engine. Integral (I) at 40%. Droop zero with S1 off, S2 on...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

After 10 years of owning a M1031 SECM, I finally have the PTO generator governor running like it should. All it took was a simple geometry. The throttle actuator has about a 45° angle of throw, it had been set up all wrong, minimal linear throw. While it ran light loads fine, my 3x3500 Watt...

My M1009 has died new curve ball thrown Updated

Worth a compression check. 98% of the time it is the IP. Check usual suspects: inlet sock in tank, lift pump, fuel filter and fuel return. Storage with ULSD containing biodiesel can cause metering valve to stick. The symptom here is dying on letting off of the throttle. Will also cause...

    My new project (M1009)

Digging around, I found at least one person making VRVs for Ford 6.9 IDI. This engine uses the same injection pump as the 6.2 Detroit, only it spins opposite direction. The C6 Ford transmission uses a similar vacuum modulation. I thought about using an electric TPS (GM 10137417 ) to drive a...

    My new project (M1009)

For a M1009 with 3.08 ratio axles, light throttle shifting to 3rd between 30 and 40 is about right. The modulator also controls clutch hydraulic pressure which is shift firmness. Too soft can wear out clutch facings.

    My new project (M1009)

Thm400 has a centrifugal governor on passenger side which is biased by a vacuum signal. If this governor leaks, the transmission will shift at higher speeds. There is also a wide open throttle switch near the accelerator pedal which forces a kick down shift if the governor speed has not been...

    My new project (M1009)

Vacuum pump is good, anything over 22 inches of Hg under 8000 feet elevation is good. Now, 8 inches Hg at idle is suspect. Needs to be at least 18" Hg at idle. Is the gauge connection direct to the VRV nipple or do you have a tee into the line? This transmission was designed to work behind...

    Stalls Intermittently

Autobahn tune up. No need to tear into it since it is cleaning itself. The "dirt" is a coating only microns thick.
