This is what I did too. I keep the tailgate up and put a small step ladder outside. Kept me dry and bug free. The Velcro cover over the zippers was enough to keep it closed.

I put Goodyear Duratrac's on my M1008. 265/75 R16 10 ply. They have a little over 4,000 miles on them and so far so good. They are a little wider than stock, but the same height as stock, and are on the original 6.5" wide wheels.
Since this got dug up from the depths of the memory banks, I guess i'm gonna have to go check on this stuff.
