Well the saga continues - the leak is still present. We took the thermostat and water crossover off the motor and cleaned/straightened all of the flanges (the ones to the cylinder heads just needed the gasket removed. Put everything together with a light coating of RTV on the paper gaskets and...
Well, we got the truck back together this morning only to find that the t/stat hsg is dripping like crazy. Not sure why as we used a new Fel-Pro gasket along with anaerobic sealant. I will say that it appeared as though the original housing flange did not appear to be flat as it rocked while...
My son and I have been trying to figure out why his M1009 has lost it's ability to fast idle/advance the pump when cold. When we purchased the truck, the old thermal switch was stuck closed and the truck idled fast with advanced pump timing all the time. Fast forward, we replaced the thermal...
Sold the original 31x10.5 tires that came with our recent M1009 purchase (previous owner had installed brand new 33x12.5s). My son is working/saving his money so that we can purchase new front end parts (tie rod ends/ball joints/axle universal joints. More to come.
Unless someone changed your axles, the M1009 front and rear axles were supplied by GM out of their gear and axle plant in Detroit. They should both be 8.5" axles that are referred to as corporate axles. The gear ratio should be 3.08.
Your gear oil has a lot of moisture/water in it. By the...
Start with the simple stuff. Check the 10 amp fuse at the bottom of the fuse box. On my recently acquired M1009, both batteries were charging just fine but I did not have a GEN 2 light nor was the volt meter functioning. All it ended up being in my case was a missing fuse - both are working...
As requested by ezgn, the Borg Warner fast idle thermal switch is BWD WT7266. I purchased it at the local Carquest (Advanced Auto) for just under $74. That included tax along with $6 to ship it from Kansas to Michigan.
Some news to report, my son and I drained the coolant system and got the fast idle temp switch replaced. Flushed the coolant system and drained a 2nd time. Cleaned the overflow tank and re-installed. Filled with fresh Prestone green and distilled water. Fast idle/IP advance now works as it should!
Driving around tonight after getting our no start condition resolved, my son and I noticed that the dashboard seemed a little dim in spots. In looking at the TM part manual, it looks like the IP uses both 194 and 168 bulbs. Can anyone tell me what locations use what bulb? I also noticed that...
New Trombetta GP relay installed and the truck fired right up after allowing the wait light to go out. Glow plug controller seems to be working great as well since the GP system continued to fire the glow plugs for a brief period of time after start up (afterglow). Now we are off to the local...
Thanks for the reply. After testing the glow plugs, we found 3 that were bad. My son and I installed 8 new 13G glow plugs and are awaiting the delivery of a new made in the USA glow plug relay from Murcal due to that fact that the old, original relay would not energize. It should be here this...
Well I went ahead and ordered the Trombetta brand GP relay - made in USA. The local Napa had the ST85 but it was made in China.
Just picked up the set of AC Delco 13G glow plugs and noticed that the spade terminal is wider than the Wellman 070's that we removed. It looks as though it is 1/4"...
Good news to report. My son and I were able to easily remove all 8 glow plugs - none were swollen. Out of the 8, we had 5 that checked good for continuity and heated up like they should. 2 did not pass the continuity check and did not heat up and the last one (cylinder 8) checked good for...
Today was rather chiller here in Michigan and I am trying to diagnose a "no start" condition on my newly acquired 1986 M1009. Seems as though it is the glow plug system. I have been going through the glow plug diagnosis manual and have found that I have 24V coming out of the ballast resistor...
Thanks for the advice. I will locate a solenoid to keep on hand. With that said, I just ordered a new thermal switch from the local parts store (Borg Warner equivalent of the AC Delco) - wasn't too bad at $60 compared to what I saw on the net for prices. Any advice on the other issues?
Well I finally went ahead and purchased a M1009 - a 1986 with 49,000 miles. My boys and I are going to fix it up and treat it like a father and son project. In any event, we are going to start with the simple fluid/filter changes and progress from there.
The vehicle is in decent...
