    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

It's called an "anology", and it is quite common for people to do this. My point is you don't have to know everything a veterinarian knows to own a horse and be a competent horseman, just like I don't need to know everything there is to know regarding electricity, or be a licensed electrician...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Here's something to think about for you, AN/ARC186: You say in your signature you own seven very spoiled horses. I'll bet you can't tell me what a pineal gland is or where it is located or how it is used in the race-horse industry without either looking it up on the internet or asking someone...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I agree with you, and I say the same thing when I here people talk about something that I've been trained in, and basically all they are doing is regurgitating something they heard third-party. But you contradict yourself. You say on one hand only a licensed electrician should touch any wiring...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I guess I could buy that single-phase motor for $186, and use this 3-phase as an idler motor and eventually build my own phase converter.

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Yep, mine does not have a capacitor on the top of the motor like your's does. Thanks for the pic.

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I see, so THAT'S what you meant when you typed "There is no shuch thing as 2 phase. Only 1 & 3". Thanks for clarifying that with us.

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Appreciate the advice. Like I said, I've passed all the inspections each time. I was being facetious by saying I was going to try some sort of weird wiring and saying "watch this y'all". I know they fill the box up with smoke at the factory, and if you let the smoke out, it won't work anymore...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Thanks Keith. I was thinking I might be able to get away with using the autotransformer that is wired into the circuit board, but I'll take your suggestion and buy the 5 HP motor for $186 and put the other one up for sale. As far as learning about 3-phase AC, I think this page does a pretty good...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I think I found my answer: Three-phase electric power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I believe I can use the neutral wire as one of the phases on the compressor motor. I'm going to have a 60-amp breaker (the "nevertrip" brand, of course) for some protection when the sparks start to fly...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I think it is the same one you have. It is the M1031 contact maintenance truck with the NP205 transfer case running a 15kW alternator via PTO that powers a single and 3-phase circuit board. The wires going to the air compressor were 3 legs, a ground, and a pair for the pressure switch.

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Thanks for the warning Dave. I certainly am not an expert in this area, but my roomate in college was a nuclear engineer, so I call him up with any questions regarding electricity that I can't find an answer to, and he usually tells me instantly and explains all the pros and cons as well...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

I was looking into that route, but figured it would be easier to just buy a compressor, so I'm thinking I might be able to make use of this one still. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, and it's too cold to walk out to the shop, but I remember the tag on the motor saying something...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

There is such a thing, Dave, but is was "phased out" in the early part of the last century. See link - Two-phase electric power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Like I said in post #1, I know the 2-phase I am referring to is not true 2-phase, but for the sake of argument, that is what...

    Convert air compressor from M1031 to 2-phase / 220V

Hello, I've done a pretty extensive search on this topic, and have not found any answers yet, so hopefully this thread is well-warranted. I removed the air compressor out of the back of my M1031 and want to use it as a shop air compressor which means it needs to go from the 3-phase / 208V setup...

CDR valves - Whos got em?

I'd agree with you regarding petroleum-based solvents, but I don't see how non-chlorinated brake cleaner would hurt anything. It does leave metal without any protection against rust, so that is why I use the silicone oil afterward, but the brake cleaner won't hurt rubber, since it is ok to use...

    700R4 Swap Into M1009

I said I counted them right when I was posting the the first post on this thread. I was typing about the different output shafts, looked them up in my catalog and typed how many types there were, then went out to the shop and found one and counted 34 splines on it. I was probably in a hurry and...

    700R4 Swap Into M1009

That would be kind of hard for me to do at the moment Dave since my shop is on my property in Alabama, and I'm currently down at our Florida property. I guess I could call my neighbor who is looking after the place for me when I'm not there, and tell him to take a pic of the the shaft if I can...

    700R4 Swap Into M1009

Sure man, here are some links: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gear-Vendor-/320789590099?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item4ab08cb053 http://www.gearvendors.com/4x4gm3s.html If you buy it new, it will cost well over a grand, but shopping around, you can find used ones for about...

    700R4 Swap Into M1009

OK Dave, if you insist. I went out and counted 34 splines on the output shaft I changed out on the last 700R4 I built, which was shortly after this thread started (I've been out of the shop I have in Alabama since then and developing our property in Florida), but I guess I could have counted...
