Ship by rail/train? (AZ to FL)

I need to ship a LMTV from Arizona to Florida. VeriTread quoted $6500. That’s the lowest price I’ve got via truck. Rail should be much cheaper? I‘m having trouble finding a shipper. Any recommendations?

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Yes, the diesel fired heater is loud. Fortunately, we don’t have to run it long. Haven‘t tried any noise reduction for the heater.

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Added ducting (silver) improves circulation considerably. Cool air intake (vertical) draws from below bunk. Hot air blows (along ceiling) toward rear of habitat. Electric mattress warmer doesn‘t use much battery power but adds a lot of comfort. (Gray foam is removed during use of heater. White...

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

That‘s the original chimney/exhaust pipe. The extent of an odor nuisance would depend on wind speed and direction. I agree that a longer pipe would likely help. RVers sometimes attach a tall exhaust to their generators, especially at a rally where they are jammed close together.

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Thermostat (gray box with coil) mounted to wood. We used Velcro for about 1/8 inch separation from surface vs original location directly against metal.

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Short chimney may explain some fumes getting into habitat. (That’s the moon, not a puff of smoke.)

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Yes, it’s a LOT of heat! I never timed it but the heater doesn’t need to run very long. Thanks for doing the math. I should have marked them but pretty sure the thinner one is from the wall and the thicker one is from the floor.

    60,000 BTU heater in M1079

Someone saw our ad on another forum and asked: “Hi - what would you say the your truck's minimum temperature capability is for semi normal habitation? Not the truck chassis but the living quarters.” My answer was: “As long as you’ve got plenty of diesel, the 60,000 BTU military heater should...

Big rig (LMTV, etc) overlanding in the Southeast - where?

Hello all, We have a M1079A1 LMTV rigged for overlanding. We’ve used it mostly in the desert Southwest on BLM land for exploring and boondocking. Thought we could do likewise in National Forests of the Southeast. Worried about low limbs whacking our solar panels. Looks like most Forest Service...

    FMTV High Speed Gears

We had 2.87 gears and rear soft locker installed by Joe at MTP Drivetrain Services in Many, Louisiana. Phone number sent by PM. At the time (November 2017), it sounded like we bought his last set of 2.87. MTP does (did?) work for the military so he may have more 2.87 gears by now.

    FMTV High Speed Gears

We had 2:87 chunks and a rear locker installed by Joe at MTP in Many, LA on our 2000 M1079A1 LMTV in November 2017. Joe indicated that he did not usually carry 2:87 gears. He probably doesn’t have any more. After that, with our stock engine (1999 275 hp 3126), max speed was around 74 mph...

    Overland Expo, West.. Who's going???

Not sure we’ll make it so we haven’t ordered tickets. No sales at gate so we asked about last minute online sales. “Yes, you may buy them as late as the day before arrival. If you purchase the day of, it may not have time to import into the system and there may be a small hiccup at check-in...

Must hold "MODE" button to move

Like many full-time RVers, we use Texas for our legal residence. They have no state income tax and are very RV friendly (can renew driver's license online, absentee voting by mail, etc.) Escapees, the national organization for full-time RVers, is headquartered in Texas for this reason. Our mail...
