I made the mistake of driving the wife's car for a small lot pick up. They brought the small mk burner in a large wooden crate and pallet. 3 minutes with a hammer and screwdriver from my trusty toolbox got everything in the car with room for more shopping.

New canvas with end curtains is about 800.00 to 1200.00. I have both and like canvas for the looks but vinyl is a lot easier to work with and easier to keep tight.

If you are talking about checking the fluid level in the master cylinder, you need to get your eyes on it from the top. It could be that it is equipped with a vent line that will need removed first. It is a challenge, and is almost as frustrating the second time as the first.

I don't know what everyone else uses, I use plumbers stem grease.

Grease is a better choice. Sometimes the old grease gets hard. A good clean up and fresh grease usually does the trick.

I have seen repair kits for some of them, I think it is the same one used on some of the older civilian cars.

I carefully disassembled mine, cleaned everything up, and coated with a light coat of waterproof grease. They work good as new. Be carful with the gasket, it is fragile.
