    Military or Civi wrecker?

Yes it's a Holmes 750. Yes, it's a miltary version. Yes, it also has a civilian counterpart. Yes, parts are still available. The 750 was the 2nd largest mechanical wreck Holmes built, before thay ventured into the hydraulic era. The 1701 is the hydraulic version. All Holmes mechanicals...

    Water leaking into cab

Civilian pickups had drip rails 74-87. 73 was the only year that didn't.

    Deuce Axles

The guy I bought my Deuce from has 5 brand new front axles, in crates. I think he's wanting to pair them up with the rear axles he has laying around. If anyone is interested, I can make some inquiries. They aren't mine, and I'm not brokering, or making a cut on them. I'd rather see them...

    Two engines

A lot depends on when you intend to use it. If it is strictly for highway-speed boosting, an auxilliary transmission is not needed. If you mount it outboard, behind the drivers seat(in place of the spare carrier), you could run a right angle drive off the front end, connected to another right...

custom trailer hitch with rotating snatch block for rear winch bumper

That might be upright, but it is definitely horizontal. When I suggest vertical, I mean the winch drum standing upright. Since you are already mounted horizontal, you might be able to build a standoff, out of your receiver tube, and tie back to the offside bull ring, for support. That might...

custom trailer hitch with rotating snatch block for rear winch bumper

The conflict in your equation is that your sheave will be too close to the drum, to allow the cable to spool properly. It will want to pile up, then tumble, causing cable damage & birdnesting. Your best bet, as mentioned, is to mount the winch vertical. Chances are, the cable will at least...

    sprag transfer case or not?

Mine is a sprag t-case. Since I'm installing a slushbox, instead of a handshaker, I'm considering using the clutch pedal to push in the sprag lock shaft. Since the sprag automatically locks the front when moving forward(and a rear tire loses traction), I can only see a need to lock it...

    4L80E or 700R4

If you get a stand alone ECM & harness, think the 4L80E is a better choice. If you want to stay mechanical, get a pro-built 700R4, & have the internal switches wired to automatically lock up in 3rd & 4th. If you use a 1-wire lockup solenoid & a TH400 kickdown plug, then all you need is a...

    Packrat's Bobbed Deuce Insanity

The first 4 are from last weekend. The rest are tonight's carnage. Got my shipment from Dave, and got most of it installed. If I don't get called out, tomorrow night is input driveline & a new ragtop.

    Two engines

My old boss told me about a trucker he ran across, years ago. This guy had an Olds V-8 mounted behind the cab of his truck. Apparently, when he was pulling in the mountains, he'd fire up the Olds, and use it for extra hill power. The story goes, that he had some kind of gearbox attached tot...

    nv5600?

IIRC, it has pto access on either side, but most are mounted on the driver's side. I does require a countershaft pto, so the output will clear the overdrive housing. The one I have is from a '92 Chevy 3500HD. It has the rear drum brake provision, and the tailhousing is longer than the...

O.K. 2 threads. with the 2nd post as: nopics I'm almost afraid to post anything else.

    Packrat's Bobbed Deuce Insanity

Most of you have seen my starter pics, in my 'hello' thread. I've almost got my rear steering pinned down, as soon as I get my coupler sleeve from the machine shop. Will get some pics, before the install. Not much progress, other than bobbing the frame, setting aflatbed on, and installing...

    nv5600?

I think it will hold up fine behind a Continental, but I'm not sure about the LD465. Absolutely not, behind a Cat or NHC250 Cummins. I was going to use a NV4500 in mine, until I found out the one I had got water in it. but then again, I'm running a fuel injected small block.

    Stopped by the NCSHP

Not tryin to split hairs, but you are talking about 2 different things. Your statute refers to CDL requirements for RV's, NOT vehicle registration requirements. I agree that it is ridiculous to restrict a vehicle to 4k, just because it is registered as an antique. Any vehicle, not...

    Stopped by the NCSHP

In KS, an antique truck tag has a weight designation. My 49 Chevy 1 1/2ton is a 12M, because I registered it before the changed it. My 66 C60 has a 24M. As of yet, I'm undecided on where to set the Deuce, mainly ince it isn't technically a 2 1/2ton anymore.

    transfer case PTO

I guess I have a similar problem, with my Deuce. I'm looking for a t-case pto, to run my 480, but I need to be able to disengage it, for road use. The only places I've found any info on them are "out of stock, but expecting more anytime". Just e-mailed Dave, this evening, so we'll see what he...

    2010 Kansas Steel Soldiers rally

I'll put it on my calendar, but no promises. 180 miles from Hays to Wichita. Come to think about it, I bought a wrecker from Squire's Towing, in Augusta. I should be able to find my way there.

Since theses pics, I mounted the rear steering gear, bobbed the frame & set a flatbed on it's back. Last weekend, I picked up a Holmes 480(wrecker unit), to be installed later. I need to get some fresh paint, to hide the 'Foresty Fire Truck' red. It will have to wait until I get closer to done.

My name is Tom, but a lot of people call me Packrat, for obvious reasons. I just bought a retired Forestry m35a, that was destined for the crusher. Currently modifying it, for light recovery & racetrack work. Won't be much left original, except the sheetmetal. I joined here, to utilize the...
