    Suppressors

Thanks and will do. Am a couple weeks away from having the electrical done. The truck was purchased less the engine and radiator. Am installing a 5.7 vortec into it and switching the gauge cluster over to the standard one with all the metric gauges so it will be available as well. Taking lots...

    Suppressors

I see there is multiple suppressors in my M1008. Curious what their purpose is. Are they strictly there just to reduce possible interference with radios? Also, am removing all the 24v and diesel electrical components and wiring. There is no alternators and I am keeping the large busses...

    Smoke and Knock

Rod noise can be a bit tricky in a diesel to identify. During compression, combustion and exhaust strokes, the piston is loaded down. It's when the piston gets to the top of the exhaust stroke that it unloads and will often contact the head. Not always the case but definitely can be. That would...

    Smoke and Knock

I would open up the lube filter and check for debris before running it anymore. Agree with rod knock being a concern.

    M1008 Relays

Thank you. I did spend some time going through the related tm's. It made reference to the large one as being the start relay as you mention. It lists the smaller ones as being the gen2 and volt gauge relays.

    M1008 Relays

Wondering if someone can tell me what these 3 (12v) relays are for? They are located in the dash on a bracket just below where the stereo would have been. Haven't opened up the harness yet to chase wires and am curious if they are for the blackout light system?

    Engine will not turn

Does the crankshaft have end play? It is something else that is easy to check and very important. My experience is with larger diesels and I have seen crankshafts tighten up on running engines from both breaks and bends. It could also help to identify if something in the transmission is loading...

    Engine will not turn

Were you able to rotate the engine a couple turns or did it possibly make a hard stop while doing so? If the turbo failed and dumped the oil into the intake, it would likely hydraulic a cylinder. Would not be a tough repair if you happen to be that lucky.

Pretty sure I got (not) scammed by a eBay seller from Japan selling radios

I had sold some electronics on Ebay recently. They were shipped across Canada. Ebay, withheld the funds from me for close to 8 weeks in the event the purchaser was not satisfied. There was no problems and funds were eventually deposited. It gave me the impression they are out to protect the...

    Differential Backlash Spec

It is not recommended to change the BL on a set of gears that are (warn in) matched. I would set it back to what you find before disassembly and confirm your pattern hasn't changed. If you haven't touched the pinion depth, that pattern should return to where it is now with BL.

    New LMC Diesel Gauges

I had pulled that out of another truck to use as we are metric in CA as well. I would like a cluster with the large tach and small fuel gauge though. If I happen to find one of those, will let ya know. The MPH cluster is the original from the truck.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Your truck looks sharp. Are those 35's with the 6" lift?

    Electric winch mount

A receiver type winch set up has limited pull capabilities at any angle other than straight ahead. Reinforcing it would likely make the portability a bit more difficult. Interested myself, if there is options out there to get around that.

    New LMC Diesel Gauges

I had a '73 gm 3/4t when young and crazy. If memory serves me well, the speedo went to 100 mph. Being in Canada though, it had an additional adapter at the driveline end of the cable which switched it to kph. It was often pinned with a slightly modified 454 under the hood. :p

    New LMC Diesel Gauges

Maybe just a coincidence, but hopefully it isn't a mistake made by the manufacturer putting the wrong numbers on the speedo.

    New LMC Diesel Gauges

I wonder why they picked such a high range on the speedo? Even the gasser of that vintage only went to 85 mph. I found a nice clean cluster from a gasser of the same vintage with the smaller gauges instead of idiot lights, just to keep it a bit more authentic. It was from a Canadian built truck...

    Mav’s M1088A1 Conversion

Good catch! You have to watch out for the jobbers as well. I had to eat a 9k repair bill after Maxi-Force passed this off to me as a new "OE" pump for a 9 liter Deere engine. It was manufactured in South America. Shaft end play was within spec but the internal driven gear had .012" of end play...

    M1008 no start

Is there not a safety neutral switch in your truck? Did you try it with transmission shifted into neutral?

Blown Turbo motors went for 3k oh my!

It's crazy how much prices have increased on engines or everything for that matter. I wouldn't be surprised if 3k wouldn't even cover the core charge on a complete OE remanufactured engine, if they were even available. I picked up two complete OE 60 series a couple years ago for 42k with 9k...

    Mav’s M1088A1 Conversion

Ya, that was my first thought, but he said there was no other debris in the pan. I have twice repaired 5.9 Cummins with the drive end of their camshafts snapped off. On both engines, the same screw for the gear case had backed out and landed in the bite. The crunched screws were hard to miss in...
