Cat 3116 lost oil and started knocking

Last year I had my LMTV trucked from Maryland to Colorado for about $3k by United States of Freight, the load was shared with another large vehicle (armored car). They're an advertiser on this forum. As for drive shafts, I had both of mine rebuilt for about $1200 earlier this year based on...

So what is in your....... Engine? (how to search parts break down for your engine)

Thanks so much for the info. Makes searching for the uprated turbo much easier with the generic market part number, not the NSN.

So what is in your....... Engine? (how to search parts break down for your engine)

OK, favor to ask: I only have a 225 hp 3116 in my 1998 M1081. I'd love to know what the Cat part is for the 290 hp turbo and governor but don't have a serial number to reference. Can you provide those two part numbers, the turbo and the governor for a 290 hp 3116? Thanks much!

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Coincidental with my little burg of Fallon, NV having a 9/11 memorial event yesterday, an unnamed alternative to SS (no names but the initials are MVPA) was holding a cross-country expedition. The expedition was the 100th anniversary of a military cross-country drive in 1919. About 50 mil...

M1083A1 - Can someone identify this part please?

Assuming that the black part in the lower-left corner of the photo is the steering box, and all the lines, fittings, and valves are under the driver's side of the cab, under where their feet would be, then the switch should be the low pressure transmitter. From the TM -365-24P, Figure 154, part...

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

One of the branches twisted open an air tank drain petcock. I could hear the air leak and pressure was slowly dropping on the gauge. Realized there was a leak, I was worried I'd ripped open a CTIS line. But was just the petcock. Quick and easy to find and fix.

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Heh. You can bust through trees and do some pretty impressive dirt embankments in an LMTV. A modified Suzuki Samurai had just blitzed down the embankment, through the trees and back up to the road. Goliath (M1081) just bulldozed through them. At the end of the video, you hear an air leak and I'm...

    Odd thing about the M1081

Good info on the actual temps and hose requirements. And absolutely right on flare vs. JIC. I got lazy and forgot the differences...

    Odd thing about the M1081

Seems that the air dryer for the M1081 is mounted different from the standard LMTV. The threads here show the old and new filters mounting directly to the frame. The old finned filter is removed and the new one mounted using a notched universal mounting plate. Reuse the original hoses only...

    Another LMTV RV Build

I had my M1081 shipped from Maryland to Colorado when I moved there. The M1081 was titled and registered in Maryland for on-road use. Colorado reciprocated, and I had it titled and registered in Colorado Springs. Since moving from Colorado to Nevada, I did the same thing, and Goliath is now a...

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

I can confirm from experience, you can get an LMTV stuck in snow. During the March blizzard in Colorado, I got my M1081 stuck twice. First time I tried to punch through three feet of snow drift. It was well-packed and after skimming the surface for a few feet, the weight dropped the front into...

Sounds like we've covered some territory very close by. I'm new to the area though, am spending more time farther north along Hwy 50. But would like to explore more near Walker Lake as well. I was looking, there's Cotton Wood Canyon trail that meanders quite a way west from the town of Walker...

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Last weekend: About 2000' climb from the highway to a remote cabin outside Hawthorne Army Depot, NV. Goliath (my M1081) did fabulously on the climb up the dirt road. My buddy's F350, not so good, overheated (cracked radiator).

Joined the club with an 18,000lb paperweight this week.

Very nice rig - not only the upgrade lights, but also a nice newer-style grill in the front. I can see one reason it's not a runner: the rear drive shaft disassembled in the cab. First thing I'd find a good truck driveline shop and take the shaft down for rebuild. Probably do the front as well...

    Speaking of Fuel Caps: Locking

I bought a locking fuel cap from Those Military Guys (see the Classified section in the forums). Locking Fuel Cap for M939 and M35A3 Military Trucks. Is available in several colors. Does not require welding, it has a toothed pawl that grips the inside of the filler neck when you tighten down the...

    Fuel cap hole?

I can tell you from experience, that's a strong chain that attaches the filter basket to the fuel tank cap. I've got a locking cap on my LMTV. Opened the cap with keys in the cap. Filled the tank, replaced the hose, drove off. Drove 60+ miles including some dirt road, till I got to my stopping...

    Driveshafts

Two place I know of for drive shaft repair or rebuild in the Maryland area: In Lorton, VA, just outside DC off I-95 is Driveline Services, aka Drive Line Specialists (https://www.drivelinespecialist.com). I've had multiple custom driveshafts done there. It's an old shop that does lots of...
