    MEP-003 Govenor linkage & fuel shut-off?

Well, if nobody else is going to answer this question, I will take a shot at it. My experience with the governor linkage and the shutoff solenoid on both the MEP-002A and 003A is that it's something you may have to dink around with a little in order to get it to work right. The main problem I...

    Sheared bolts on generator

I think Ike correctly diagnosed how this happened -- the generator electrical output was closed on an out-of-phase bus. Something you don't see very often, but that has instantly wrecked even very large generators. Good diagnosis!

    Starter disconnect switch

Harley, My experience is that either a 400 Hz or a 60 Hz control box will work OK if there is no stray ground on the back of the VR board from the new pop rivets. YMMV. The difficulty you are having in diagnosing the problem is that the schematic you are working from does not correspond...

    Starter disconnect switch

Ike, They have different part numbers either silk-screened or etched into the copper traces. And they are laid out different, although they are functionally very similar. The TM for the MEP-003A, 112A shows both and identifies which is which. Richard

    Starter disconnect switch

Harley, You are about to enter the 400 Hz Zone, where things are not as they appear, or as you THINK they appear. You have already stumbled upon one of the inexplicable differences between 60 Hz control boxes and 400 Hz control boxes. You should remember that this has already driven me CRAZY...

    Starter disconnect switch

Harley, I had the same problem and it almost drove me crazy --maybe it DID drive me crazy. The problem turned out to be a pop rivet (one of those holding the unit ID plate on the OUTSIDE of the control box) grounding a lead on the back of the AC voltage regulator card INSIDE the control box...

    Mep-002a and m116a2 upgrades

Looks nice! I have considered adding an auxiliary fuel tank like you have done but am some concerned about the increased weight on the tongue affecting my ability to tow with a small vehicle when the tank is full. Really no other place to put it though. What I need is a larger tow vehicle...

    MEP 003 replacement panels

I have a few of these replacement panels, new in boxes. Got them from GL some time ago and haven't gotten around to moving them out to folks who want/need them. Maybe with a little prodding I'll get on it sooner rather than later. I had looked for a long time to find these, so I don't think...

Generator Hours - How high have you seen on 002 or 003

I've never seen an MEP-002A, 003A in what I would call "worn out" condition unless it has been unmaintained and abused to failure, which is not likely in military service. It's usually difficult to determine how many hours any particular unit has run unless you happen to have complete detailed...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

Ike, Just browsing around, I found the old mesh type strainers and gasket that fit the Facet pumps here for less than $6.00 + shipping. No telling what they want for shipping, but I would expect the total to be less than the eBay prices I mentioned above in Post #16. And I should mention that...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

Ike, I have several Facet pumps with the new ceramic filters. I prefer the old mesh strainers but I suppose the ceramic works OK too. The strainers of either type and the gaskets should be readily available from the usual sources that sell Facet pumps. Do a search on eBay for "Facet filter"...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

Stan, That picture wasn't of one of my failed pumps; just intended to show the difference between old and new styles. I plagiarized it from an eBay seller who had a single new pump for sale. Sold for $100 + shipping, but not to me. Still, a bargain I suppose, if someone HAD to have a new...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

Stan, The Facet 480517E fuel pumps, the ones with the cube-shaped EMI filters, came directly from GL on a pair of MEP-003As. So they must have been installed by the military or civilian contract rebuilder during a reset. They looked newer than some of the old style pumps on the same machines...

    MEP-003a DC circuit breaker troubles

The short is in the little box (the EMI filter) and not in the round pump. I don't think the shorted EMI filter can be fixed, at least with reasonable effort. And I don't know where to get another one without also buying the pump. The pump and EMI filter are sold together as an assembly even...

    MEP-003a DC circuit breaker troubles

The pump next to the gen is the second of two pumps that work in series to feed fuel to the filters. You might be able to run the genny on just one pump by disconnecting the power to that pump, but I have never had much luck doing that. In any case, you CAN operate without the shorted EMI...

    MEP-003a DC circuit breaker troubles

They are each mounted by a metal tongue under the bolts holding the fuel pumps to their bracket. To unground them, just take out the bolt and suspend the EMI filter in air by its wires. Keep the fuel pump grounded if you want it to work.

    MEP-003a DC circuit breaker troubles

Uloadit Apparently, something on the DC 24 Volt power buss has failed resulting in a short to ground. This happened almost surely as a result of a voltage spike on the buss when the neg connection to the battery fell off. You'll have to track it down by disconnecting things one at a time...

    MEP 003a back together...but...

Speddmon, There really are two slightly different versions of the AC voltage regulator card you may find in either an MEP-002A or an MEP-003A. One is P/N 72-5020 and the other is P/N 72-5338. But they are physically interchangeable, and seem to work the same despite the addition of a few...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

ETN550, The fuel pump that failed me was a round Facet 480517E. It failed by refusing to de-energize its internal solenoid and letting the pump plunger return for another stroke. I believe all the round Facet pumps used in these gennys have external EMI filters in the DC power line. The...

    MEP-002A, 003A Fuel Pump Failures

And Storeman, thanks for your advice and concurrence, too. I'm now convinced that it is spikes on the DC, no matter how unlikely that seemed to me at first. I was trying to blame it on the pump, but that isn't where I should have looked. Regards, Richard
