Well I got the new ignition switch in.
Man was that fun! Not!
Also put in a new starter relay, (3rd one) since it wants
to run the starter continully after turning the key.
Before I did all this i cleaned all the plugs, contacts ect. on all sides of the
fuse box/gang box.
Tomorrow I will remove...
Part # for ignition switch?
Anyone know the correct part # for the ignition switch?
I got a "master pro" brand # 2-IS99 from O'Reillys
but am not sure if it will handle 24 volts.
The people at parts store just look at me perplexed when i tell them
its a 24V system.
They know even less at...
Guys thanks, i just needed to whine a little and take a brake for a day.
Your words actually encouraged me today and I will be back at it tomorrow.
Your right, looking at the diagram, theres not that much to it.
I am going after every wire in the starting system this weekend.
I was looking at...
Well im about as frustrated as i can be.
I went out to pull the starter and thought i would test the starter relay with the meter again first.
Figured I'd better since i did not test it the way as described in the post above.
Where there was power now there is none. The red wire has no volts at...
This one has the solenoid and starter as one piece. The posts for it are on the solenoid, not the starter. Also there are 2 posts and some people have told me there are supposed to be 3.
I looked at flywheel when i had the starter off before. The teeth that i could see looked okay.
It only made...
It was spinning not engaging.
This is the 2nd starter relay, i put one it right away after reading about it in the FAQ.
Then again when this problem happened out of GP.
Have to read back as don't recall anything about the starter switch. Where is that?
Meter reads 24 volts on big red wire coming...
Thanks to all.
Rick Im wondering that myself. Maybe they tested it as a 12v.
Or what about this, the starter looks pretty new, what if the dealer i got it
from put a civilian 12v starter in it and it worked for awhile and now is fried?
According to title the only 3 owners have been Gov. Liq...
Well this is a new one in this ongoing saga.
Crash, Warthog, and rick have you guys ever heard of this?
Removed dash, didn't help a whole lot as i could only see a little more.
I checked and cleaned all the fuse contacts, in fact replaced all the fuses a week ago.
So im under the dash and i see...
Thank you much Rick. Yes I touched a large screw driver to the large post and the little one at the same time, it left a scorch mark on the big one.
I did have the starter tested and it came up good. But maybe not as it was making a
screaching sound upon starting before all this happened. I had...
okay, turned key to first postion, waited for wait light to go out,
touched screw driver to small post and big post on starter, lots of sparks,
starter did not turn, did not start start truck.
What does that mean?
I only did it for a sec. as the poping and sparks seemed a little much.
Had...
Rick thanks, i was thinking of trying that today but was a little unsure if i would cause more damage, now that you have suggested it, i will try it.
After looking at the diagram
(getting better at understanding it) it looks as though the smaller wire on the starter solenoid goes to the...
Well its the smaller wire on the solonoid, its black but upon further inspection it is a splice for some reason and turns to red. Does it go to the starter relay?
The volt meter doesn't have anything to do with it starting right?
ETA;
Well I figured after i replaced every fusible link i could...
Okay was swamped with family stuff yesterday so didn't get to it till today.
Starter wire is hot at both ends. 24 volts. Guess i didn't have the meter grounded
well the first time.
So now what?
Also, the black wire on the starter solenoid, where does it go? More importantly
how do i find it...
Had the batts. and the starter checked at o'reilly's , all good. Batts checked out on amps too.
So I spent the last couple hours trying to wrestle that beast back in,(starter) the support bracket is
a bitch to say the least.
I have 2 fusible links that looked good but will replace them anyway...
I dont think its the batteries.
I took them out to charge them again and put in 2 car batteries and it still wont start.
I just took the starter out and am going up to have the starter and batts. tested.
Will let you know how the test goes.
ETA; I put a meter on the starter relay too. black to...
Rick, it's certainly possible i put the batt. cables on wrong.
Can anyone post a pic or tell me whats right?
I have not taken anything off buss terminals.
just one at a time to replace fusible link, then right back on only open terminal.
Also, I put the meter on the buss terminal that the red...
