Howdy. I got a nice mep 002a but it has some issue that maybe you guys can help me figure out.
1: The first three pics are of the fuel injection pump. I have circled silver colored plug that i had to put on since diesel was spilling out when I cranked. The question is wether a plug to bleed the...
I can’t get the link to open. I’d like to read it! I’ve had these 002s for 5 years with one running 24/7 and now have two running 24/7. Swapping over to my four new to me 005s. One of them should take care of my electrical needs for a while. I plan to sell my 002s. Just want to repair the one...
These type of generators require you to hold the start switch engaged much longer than anything else in your life. Once it starts, continue to hold the switch in start until the generator head gets energized and the oil pressure comes up. I have a 003a that requires me to hold it for around...
I sale a lot of military generators and would much rather have a 003a over a 803a. When the 803a fails its very difficult to find the problem when times are tough. The 003a is more reliable but you have to run it more to work out all the quirks. All the items you mentioned are common problems...
That's the beauty of the 003A. Its simple to use and fix. But you have to get smart on the gen set. We ran one for six months. It never failed, (except when someone didn't fuel it up) We stopped it once a day, did PMCS and changed oil once a month. I wanted to take the thing home.
Link for...
New to the forum, been reading for a while on my new to me 002A. Love this forum, full of awesome information!
I'm having an issue with my starter not dropping out when the engine is running. I checked the starter lock out switch and it works correctly. I get continuity with the engine off...
I briefly owned a fully operational NF-2 set. I only bought it for the trailer/enclosure to house my MEP-002a genset. Initially before repurposing the enclosure, I ran the NF-2 with its original Onan 2 cyl CCK engine and it ran very smoothly and both lights were pretty darn cool when lit up...
So you are saying that when you are initially able to start it (stone cold) or (either warm after an hour or so from shutdown), it will run as long as you want it to? But it will not restart after it has been run up to operating temperature? I think that clunk you are hearing from right side...
Have a spare MEP-002Astarter. I cleaned it up and put it back together. I can make it run by bypassing the solenoid but I can’t make the solenoid pull in. I have continuity at the solenoid coil and it sparks but doesn’t pull in. I have a new solenoid and it does the same thing. Am I missing...
If it were me I would not attempt to start it until you verify what you have there. If it is truly a MEP-002a then its gonna be a 24V system (starter, fuel pumps, glow plugs, etc.). Otherwise, it might be an Onan 12V civilian version where someone converted a military skid chassis and some of...
I have a chance to buy a Libby mep 002a with 7 hours on the meter. There is no date of manufacture stamped on the nameplate but it is definetly military. CARC in 2002.
The odd thing to me is that there are only 2 battery cables and a nameplate that says 12 volt battery.
There is also a...
"Thermostart flame starter" that was a new one for me! Had to do some Googling but got a hit and found some info:

& this one (2nd post down)...
I purchased the exact same model (NF-2 light tower) off CL a couple years ago but I didn't keep it long. I only bought it for the enclosure to house my MEP-002a in, so I sold the engine on CL for what I paid for the unit. The engine in mine was a replacement engine and ran like a top. One...
Thank-you very much. I changed the oil, oil filter and changed (2) of the fuel filters but I did not mess with the smallest filter because I did not have a new gasket. Do you think that is OK? What size gasket would I need? I did not see any leaks. So far, so good. I appreciate all of the help...
I use NAPA Gold # 1004 (or equal) for the oil filter. Canister on low side of engine opposite starter side (and on same side as fuel filters). Single bolt holds down lid, 3/4" hex head. Remove bolt and lid and pull old filter. IIRC there's a 1/8" NPT brass plug that can be loosened to drain...
I picked up 2 002a's in a private sale. Both units run, but one has starter issues. I found the flywheel ring gear and starter drive trashed. Repaired starter and replaced flywheel/ring gear combination. Now when I start the unit, the starter bangs in and out constantly until I let up on S1...
Interestingly, the glow plugs and air heaters are active during cranking on the 002A and 003A. This means that if you start cranking without any preheat and it starts in 20 seconds, you preheated for 20 seconds before it would start.
The 72-5020 and 72-5338 are the same for all practical purposes. There are minor and insignificant differences in the ratings of a couple components, but the circuit is the same. When I designed the replacement regulator that I sell, I went though every component, looking up its NSN and...
