Well, after a month I finally started Brutus at 5pm today with his new batteries. He started right up. My self-fabbed support worked very well. The second picture I'm calling "Deuce Owner's Vacation Spot." I mean there's a beach chair, so I must be on vacation.
I'm getting very close to putting my new batteries in. Two days of rain is holding me up as far as painting goes. I thought it might be interesting to compare the original battery support with the one I fabricated. I think mine is an upgrade. The new one dropped right in. The bolt holes lined up...
kovi, thank you for giving us the benefits of your machinists eye. I have Ouverson hubs on the front axle of my bobbed Deuce. I love them. They function easily on the coldest Winter days. I noticed there are reliefs on the flange side between the bolt holes and the bearing on the Boyce hubs. I...
You're welcome cbrTodd. I think your right about time causing the problem. DOT 5 is way superior to the earlier brake fluids because it's silicone based. The older types of brake fluid such as DOT 3 attract moisture and will lead to corrosion in brake systems when air is present. It also...
Don't you just love surprises! Great job on your repair and thank you for the pictures. I wonder what caused the sludge? Moisture? Are you using Dot 3 or Dot 5 brake fluid? Nice Deuce.
You're doing the paint already? Gee, I didn't think you were done with the rockers yet. The Marine paint scheme looks sharp. I find the Rapco spray paint to be non-adhering, soft, rough and porous. I don't think it hinders rust at all. So I'm experimenting with a new combination. First I use...
I like it! I don't know what 34052 green looks like. Brutus is O.D. green. It's easy paint to get. My truck had a black frame originally. The body may have been painted desert tan. I'm not sure. It's interesting that you fuel tank is on the driver's side. That's where my spare tire is. My tank...
I finished the battery support today. I could put it in Brutus tomorrow ( the frame brackets are already drilled ), but I want to clean up and paint the brackets and under the cab first. On the rear of the frame is my adjustable battery box retainer. I used all stainless bolts with locknuts and...
ldmack3, in your picture four right behind the rear spring mount is the boxed in area, that from the outside of my Deuce, looks worse than yours. I see bondoed mesh on mine. I can hardly wait to see what's behind it. Not. Again, thanks for all the info and pics. It's invaluable to me.
Wow! Your experience is so similar to mine. I also use .030 flux core. I welded my battery support on 5/5 low setting. I'm sure my rockers are in the exact same condition as yours even though my Brutus is an '84. You are absolutely right about metal gaps. I cut out a section of my front driver's...
Thanks Tim! I think it was the short 1/4" stick out I used. Keeps the arc in the shield gas better. I use the lightest shade possible and when the sun went behind the clouds I noticed I couldn't see anything but the arc. Then the sun would come out for a couple of seconds and I could see the...
A very informative post for me ldmack3. My truck needs help in the exact same area. I bet many Deuces do. Mine was bondoed. I would like to know what size wire you used. Were you welding with or without gas? What were the approximate settings on your MIG? Did you repeatedly tack it or drag the...
Welcome to Steel Soldiers! There are a lot of really knowledgeable, helpful members here that can help you out. I'm not one of them. I've never messed with my hydraulic head. Many others have though. Try searching here for a related post. And we love pictures! It helps us to figure out what your...
Well....I got a step closer today. I welded my new battery support together.
The first pic is a fuzzy photo of my attempt at a stack of dimes. Only two or three of the welds came out like that. The second pic is the welded support in Brutus. The third pic is of my high tech driveway welding...
