Looks like my new seal is a little different than yours (and from my old ones as well). I'm actually doing 2 winches at once and the other one has a seal similar to yours, without a raised edge.

Keeping the worm gear in the bearing it was already in, I pressed both out and inserted the drive shaft / big gear. Then pressed the worm gear / rear bearing assembly back in and pressed the other side bearing on. Like butter. Used old bearings of the same size as spacers for the arbor press.

OK the worm gear is back in with both bearings. Man this is pretty frustrating when the TM is just plain wrong. First, above, it told me to put the worm gear in first. THEN--have a look at frame 7 attached here. All the text is about the gearcase cover (the big round disc that covers the end...

Wow, old thread. I ended up giving the whole axle assembly to a scrapper. Not the brightest move, in hindsight, but the missus was sick of it on the lawn. Can't blame her, I was too.

Saw one on Top Shot last night, with a 1919 mounted and firing. That was pretty cool.

I haven't worked on these winches for a while but I'm getting to the point of re-assembly. I've noticed, though, that one of the bushing-type bearings inside the drum is fairly scored. The TM shows these as removable but I'm not immediately seeing how...

All the copper tubing to be salvaged from scrapping out a deuce: about 17 lbs (mainly just the fuel and air tubing, not wiring or anything crazy)
