I've come to terms with it, as they put themselves in my way. There are way toi many lifeguards around the gene pool anyway. I do all I can but it is in God's hands once they foul the track. Anymore, it just makes me angry at whoever it is doing the dumb move. Now if I ever hit a car with...
It was definitely something sticking or grounding in the regulator. Unplugged it and the drain went away. Put in my spare regulator and it will sit for days and can still crank. Thanks everyone.
No worries at all, hope I didn't sound like I was not greatful for your post. After all, I would guarantee someone else who really needs that kind of help will find this thread and your post extremely useful, so don't feel like your time went to waste.

Mine just did this to me too. Was working on it in the garage, went to dinner, came home and noticed a glow... was a bad driver side alternator diode. Had it rebuilt and all is good now. Glad you got it figured out.
I found the issue. Two 1435 wires were disconnected. After looking through the TM those were ground wires. Hooked them to a good ground, and surprise surprise, everything works correctly. Bad grounds and no grounds do funny things!
Another sneaky thing we did, was go aboard other destroyers of our class and steal the parts we needed to get underway. SIMA was Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity. We managed to ahem, appropriate a few SIMA hats. Go to a ship, especially on a weekend, and request to come aboard, we know...
