I was looking at going down that same "rabbit hole" for my home back when the surplus 10K gen-sets were going for $300-$500 . What stopped me was the later gen-set auctions the prices were going for $3,000-$5,000 and the auto transfer option was rare and very expensive at the time.

Why replace the surge brakes? IMHO that is one of the best features on those trailers. A properly maintained surge brake system is fool proof and operates so smoothly you hardly realize that trailer is behind you. Just get a pintle hitch adapter for your tow vehicle and you will be well ahead...
A good quality high temperature off the shelf spray paint in a rattle can is all you need. I use to paint my service trucks exhaust systems back in the day. It would hold up for a several years depending how many salty roads you travel.

I think you may be losing your "Clout", or maybe your "Reputation" at your truck dealership. They should have come to you first for some simple repair advise before they decided to do a "hack job".
These young mechanics now-a-days know it all and don't need us olé-timers anymore.
I think bad/stuck injectors are causing most if not all of your issues.
You mentioned you installed new-remanufactured injectors in an earlier post and your assuming all is good.
I bought some rebuilt injectors on ebay a few years back "trying to save some money" and found them to be worse than...
