The truck in my avitar is set up with 4.88 gears, a two speed transfer case, an Allison MT 643 and low profile 22.5" tires. It cruises at 58 mph at 2500 rpm.

It sounds like you have some wear in the shifter on the trans. They wear and get sloppy. I had a truck the started having shifter issues and I ended up replacing the shifter because the tip had worn and was not shifting fully. I also remember changing some other small parts.

With that trans and its low gear you might run into issues with over torquing the drive train with a transfer case that has low range.
There are two issues with wedge brakes. The first issue is very few people know how to correctly adjust them and accidentally back one shoe off per wheel. The second issue is you have to replace everything when you do a brake job, very expensive.
