New to me MEP002A Few issues

First off congrats on getting a runner, the onboard Hz gauge (or rather its frequency transducer) is probably the number one failure point on these units, they are also rather pricey to replace, on a bit of good news one of our members now produces a set of drop in digital meters. So don't...

    Anyone recognize this Genset?

Looks like a predicessor to the MEP-004a, a large part of the reason the MEP generator standardzation program was created was the logistical nightmare they faced in the vietnam era trying to support hundreds if not thousands of different models of generators as the DOD had no unified generator...

003A developed sudden starting circuit short 24v to ground

There was a big mess with the acquisitions contract process on these generators in the late 1970's / early 1980's, googling will reveal some reports on its progress through the court system. I may get this wrong, but the mess goes something like this, you will note there are 3 common labels on...

003A developed sudden starting circuit short 24v to ground

I am not so sure the military "upgraded" so much as offered both, I have a MEP-002a that came from GL with a Type 1 starter built by Southern Automotive it is new enough still look almost brand new and has a web site URL printed on the label, I am guessing from its 2008 major service (stenciled...

003A developed sudden starting circuit short 24v to ground

You can get a cheap piece of junk compatible Chinese import starter that will work on your MEP-003a for about $125. Ike p.s. changing these can be a pain, it is a tight space to get to the bolts, a wobble extension set really helps, also a dogleg offset box wrench

    MEP002 injector pull out

In my experience removing the cooling fins can be the hardest part and require heating and some encouragement with a hammer and brass punch, just be careful they can be expensive to replace. ike

    MEP002 injector pull out

Have you checked the setup on the governor in particularly the length of the adjustable compressing shaft?

    MEP-002A & MEP-003A engine manual

Lucky Dog, your dyslexia is showing, the marine water cooled model was the MDJE, which is the same water cooled engine used on the RDJE except with a radiator instead, unless it was the illusive "city water" cooled RDJE, which is really just an MDJE painted green instead of white. Ike p.s...

MEP003A opening main breaker at <75% load

Also what is the history on this unit, could someone have swapped out the box with the CT in it from a MEP-002a and not reset it for a MEP-003a? just a thought as that trip point would be about right for a MEP-002a. Again the first thing I would check is that R3 is adjusted correctly since...

003A developed sudden starting circuit short 24v to ground

He bought it for household emergency backup a year or two ago to power emergency medical devices, etc, Which I think he has connected to a transfer switch via a plug in receptacle. Ike

003A developed sudden starting circuit short 24v to ground

If it is the wires to the slave jump starting jack on the front, you can simply disconnect them on the far end, they are either hard wired to the battery post or the positive is to the solenoid at the starter. I have seen both ways, not sure which one is "correct" and which was a retrofit. I...

    MEP-002A & MEP-003A engine manual

That is not exactly the engine on the MEP-002a, the MEP-002a has a DJEM not DJEAM or DJEBM. I am not sure exactly what the differences are, but on the civilian engines of the DJB / DJE family the DJBA and DJB are similar I think the DJBA has staggered pistons and the DJB has non staggered.

    MEP 002A Maximum Wattage

I am at about 250 ft above sea level and have put about 7200 watts on my MEP-002a, it was not sounding happy, but was not dropping HZ, sounded much happier at 6500 watts, mine also shows about 2,000 hours on the meter for what good that is.

    How much is too little?

For a portable small load bank I find cheap hair dryers hard to beat, 1,500 or so watts for about $6 each online

    Loading MEP802 onto trailer

Come along and pipes to roll it on, while I have never done this with a MEP-802 I have done it with my MEP-701a, as well as other heavy things

    Yet another MEP003a Issue!

White smoke on start up is relative, my MEP-002a gives a couple of puffs of white smoke on start up if it is cold out then clears right up in under 10-15 seconds. By contrast before replacing 2 of the injectors and getting the governor set right my MEP-003a would cloud up a 50 ft radius in...

    Yet another MEP003a Issue!

It could be either or both, I have a similar slow starting MEP-003a, although not as bad as this one, and part of the problem seems to have been caused by the governor arm mostly unscrewing the linkage (lock nuts loose, making it about an inch too long) this kept the governor from applying full...

    Yet another MEP003a Issue!

The quote above about water entering the combustion chamber would likely not apply here since it is a air cooled engine.

    Yet another MEP003a Issue!

There are a number of possibilities ranging from worn out engine with low compression, to a simple matter of the governor linkage getting stuck and not moving all the way. So the next question is does it smoke, while / after starting, and if so what color is the smoke?

fuel additive for long term storage

You should be aware that use of biocides tends to make diesel exhaust toxic
