You have made a good point about the wire colors.
Black wires are common for wiring stuff with larger than 12 gauge and we just hest shrink or tape the ends the correct color to pass inspection and for our own identification.

If the vent line was missing for a long time it is possible that their is water in the master cylinder. The water may have caused the leve to rise and the fluid to splash out.
They look like the same panel that is used on a generac brand generator I saw two weeks ago at an event.
I am using one to test/ load my MEP 903 B.
